Running a D44 spool in a DD

I want to be locked for an upcoming event but haven't got the funds at the moment to build up my recently acquired D44 right away. It's ready to run and has 3.55's (matches my current front turdy) I could afford a $50 or $60 spool but can I drive it on the road then??

I'm going to get a Detroit and 4.88's when I build it out but that is later in the Summer/Fall.

Ideas?? Thoughts? Suggestions? Warnings?

For temporary, I guess it's OK. But if you keep it like that for a long time, you'll be going through tires real quick.

Why not get an aussie for 230 and sell it once you don't need it? that would be much better for your tires on the road.

If you do a full spool, your going to have to get the gears installed, unless you can do it yourself.

Might try to weld the spider gears together, but to do it right, your going to have to pull the gear as well.
May as well leave it open for the time being.

I run a spool in my 44 and daily drove it for about 9 months, It wasnt bad on the street at all but sure did run through tires real fast.

Search on mini-spool, mini spool or spool. I have have had a mini spool in my Dana 44 for about 2 years and have written about it numerous times. I like it a lot. It has draw backs but over all it has been a good choice for me.

I wouldn't. You're bouncing around a corner, as stated above- tires wear out QUICKLY. Take a corner hard when wet and you're whipping your ass end around, wondering why your tires broke free so easily. Just stick to open for now. Do more when it's more affordable to you.

The one thing good about a spool though, you ALWAYS know what it's going to do. Very predictable. Just not road friendly.

I'm gonna have to add a statement to this post.

I DD with my detroit on the rain soaked roads here in the PNW quite frequently. As do others with their auto lockers. There is no difference in a tight turn between a spool and an auto locker.

Spools just don't have the quirks that auto lockers have, no unexpected lane changes.

You can always buy a cheap mini spool and sell it later after you get the money.

A mini-spool wouldn't be a bad choice. I'd run a full spool in my D44 rear if I could get one made for 33-splines or 35 splines. I've only seen 30-spline full spools though.

Thats not entirely true. You can take your foot off of the gas with a detroit, and coast around the corner unlocked. I tow in the rain and snow with my detroit, and dont *dare* touch the throttle in a corner.. ;)

I'm going to an ARB here in the next month or so, party for that reason (and partly go to 35 spline).

I think if you are just wanting to run one event locked you should just get the mini and then pull it after you get back (wont really take that long). But if you are set with putting it in and leaving it, seriously have fun. My buddies running welded front and rear (trail rig only). My rig broke so i tossed it on his trailer and drove his for about 50miles or so, on backroads, freeways, and though town. Totally sucked!!! Damn jeep jumping all over the place like Tigger on meth. Pretty much was a crappy ride. Too much hop on corners and you "WILL" snap an axle.

Welded spiders = lame
