View Full Version : Who has a front license plate on their jeep?

I ask this because I was pulled over today in Farmington for not having one.

I was let off with a warning. No mention of not having mud flaps or the fact that I was missing two fender flares.

Then as I drove away I passed no less than 6 vehicles without front plates.

No sweat since I was let off. But I just wondered how many actually "wear" a front plate.

i dont, but florida doesnt require them :explosion

I have 2. One of them is mine.....

IL requires a front plate and will ticket without one.

IF you are bitching about getting hasseled because you did not have a plate....

Here we go again....

Popcorn anyone?

Haven't had a front plate on my wife's VW since we bought it in 2000, no problems. I was pulled over for no mudflaps on the XJ when I had it and given a warning. I just think lifted Jeeps tend to draw more attention.

Considering the front plate have "fallen off" of three of my five rigs (I don't mention that they "fell off" after I took the bolts out - just that they weren't there one day. They're actually hanging on the wall in my garage...) and I've just gotten a talking-to once about it, I don't see any issue.

California theoretically requires a front plate (probably to make the Photo RADAR useful...) but I've not had trouble driving about without one. It seems to be largely a discretionary issue on the part of the cops.

Was it UHP or Davis Co that pulled you over? Just curious. I have a front plate on the XJ but have had several other cars over the years without one. It's hit and miss with the cops. I got pulled over one time for no mud flaps but he said my flares were fine then 2 wks later got pulled over (with the flaps on) for my tires sticking out too far past the flares... whattyagonnado? :confused1

I have a front plate. I've been pulled over once in one of my 3 other xj's that didn't have front plates. I see no reason to give them a reason to pull me over. When I get the winch bumper,(someday) I'll make a way to quick release it for trail use.

I hope I don't ever get pulled over on the trail for no plate or mudflaps or something:D

Geepfreak "wears" one. I'm sure he messed it up nudging me over the uphills the other night. I've got dents from the plate bolts in my rear bumper.

edit: I got a verbal warning.

Farmington PD. Funny thing is, I know almost all the Farmington Police guys. I played on a softball team with them a couple of years ago. It had to be the one guy I didn't know.

Oh well like I said, no sweat I got a warning. He was actually semi-cool when, as required by Utah CCW Law, I informed him that I was carrying a gun. He asked where it was and that was it.

He did make a comment about the plates that was a little "to the point". He said, "They give you two, the second one is not a spare."

"Not I", said the horse.

I was pulled over once by a sherrif outside of Santaquin and given a warning. Two years later, I was stopped at one of those police barrier/catch all the drunks/things and given another warning. I just don't want to scratch up my "spare". ;)

Never been bothered for no plate on the front of my 99.
Never had one on it.
My 91 does have one.
Had a 77 Nova a few years ago... had a cop in FRONT of me at NIGHT, he moved over and slowed down, got in behind me and pulled me over.
Said I had NO front plate. I told him to look agian.
YES I did have a plate on the front.
How are ya gonna see if a front plate is on at night with headlights shinning at ya when you are in front of someone????????

I run a plate on my Jeep but not my Honda. In downtown SLC, if you get a parking ticket and do not have a front plate, your nearly gaurenteed a ticket for the no plate as well.

if you pass through wyoming without a front plate you are almost garenteed to get stopped. the whp stops you for the plate, and then finds anything else wrong with your vehicle. tech tip: get a mag-lite holder and bolt it to the back of the plate and snap it to your roller fairlead. works great when they stop you and you just put the plate back on.

I was pulled over twice in my BMW for this. Once for having a German plate and once for no plate. Been Bothered by a cop about my tires sticking out past my fenders but he failed to notice the missing front plate(he had just finished building his CJ on 35's)as well as another cop but he was a little distracted by the open 30 pack:sad1: . Really depends on the police officer's discretion.

Just bought the Jeep and was on my way home with new tags, but did not have the front on because there was no bracket. got a fix it ticket and had to go buy one from the stealer. $30 for the bracket and a picture of it (and tag) installed and didn't have to pay the ticket. I was pulled over by UHP at point of the mountain.

What is the reason behind front plates, anyhow? Is it really for photo RADAR and the like?

If that's so, I'm wondering how long it will last - photo RADAR is being struck down on Fourth Amendment grounds in various states...

I have front plates on my jeep, but i got a new mustang and it has no place for plates on the front. I got stopped once and was told "to do what i had to do to put it on". Then a week later the wife drove it to work; a Roy cop came in and ask who's mustang, was warned to put a plate on it or else get a ticket. That was about 4 months ago. Im not going to drill holes in my bumper.

I drove a Toyota Corolla for 15 years with no hassles about no front plate (and plenty of tickets for other things). Within 1 year of driving my Jeep with no plate I got pulled over for "speeding" and got a ticket for speeding and no front plates. My daughter got pulled over for reckless driving and got cited for no front plate on her Nissan. No place to mount it on her bumper either so we drilled holes. It is the law to have them on but it's a personal cop issue on whether or not you'll get cited. I still don't have plates on the front of mine (unless the peace frog is considered a plate).

I've been pulled over twice in Utah, and once in Wyoming for no front plate. Three different vehicles too ('74 Chev 3/4 ton, '78 Trans Am, '98 Dodge 3/4 ton). All three times, the cop said he pulled me over for not having a front plate. Did NOT get a ticket for not having it any of those times. But... The last time I got pulled over in Utah (I-15 between Centerville and Farmington), in the process of going over my rig with a fine tooth comb, they discovered that my wife, who was a passenger, had a bench warrant for an upaid traffic ticket from like 10 years ago. They cuffed her and took her to the Davis county Jail. Where the nice guys there would not let me pay her out right away, because I didn't have exact change (seriously - they made me leave and come back to break a $20).

I need those kinds of hassles like I need bleeding piles. All my vehicles, including my Jeep have a front plate...

Well, since we're being honest now... My XJ's reliability has been iffy at best in the past few years and I've been paranoid that the 1st impression I make with you all as being "that guy" who broke down and held everyone up. I've got most of the issues sorted out now and have already gotten my time off request approved for Fall Fling! I should be there Wednesday night through Sunday afternoon. I'll be looking forward to putting faces to the names with everyone since the only person from the club I've ever met in person is Jeremy (very cool guy by the way) and I've spoken to Spencer once on the phone. Plus I have been a little shy which isn't very manly, I know.

I couldn't think of a better group of people to break down with. :D
I'm a relatively newbie around here, since late Feb/March. I have been to every event but the BBQ this last month. Trust me, these guys are fun loving and an awesome group to hang around with. There is no reason to be shy or scared of them. :) Joining and coming to these events has been one of the best things I've done this year.

ditto but only 20 miles north of Baghdad....and 70 for us (I HOPE)

i've never been pulled over for no front licence plate...have, however, been pulled over cuz the cop couldnt see my license plate which has conformed itself to the front bumper on my cj thanks to various things.....and a whole passel of mud.

other than that, i keep both plates on...WSP and the county guys dont play.

in texas, my friends who dont have license plate brackets for their cars stick em in the front dash of their car. both plates are posted...and the cops dont bitch (too much)
