View Full Version : Your family?

Does your family hate the fact that you want to fourwheel and/or mod your Jeep?

I thought it would be fun to do this trail run organized by CO4x4.org and then go camping, so I mentioned it to my family. Here are the responses:

Mom: "I don't know about being a passenger on that... that just doesn't sound like fun."

Sister: "Meh."

Dad: Paraphrased, but basically: "Hell no. Why do you think we always want to do what you want to do?"

I just love the support! lol... My parents pretty much would rather die than see me "build" my Jeep, and they are very anti-4 wheeling... I wish they could see the light. Maybe I could get my sister into it, she's only 13! Oh well, I'm still goin'.

Thats how i get people to go with me. Tell them its just sightseeing and some pretty lakes and stuff. Then take a nice "trail" with wicked boulders. They always love it.

My dad loves this stuff. He bought my XJ from me! One sister drove a YJ for a while and the other one is on her 2nd ZJ. Its a jeep thing around here.

In a nutshell, yes to all of the above.

That is exactly why I take vacations FROM my family and not WITH them. I figure that since they get to harass me 50 weeks out of the year, I am entitled to a couple weeks parole. What they do for fun? Beats the hell out of me... they can bob for corn-dogs at the state fair for all I care.

Solution? Fire them and get a new family. Since we ran the youngest daughter off, we have a spare room & bath. Rent is cheap but the wheelin is not real abundant out here. :dunno:

My parents support nothing that I do.

Of course that lack of support led me to getting my XJ as they talked me out of restoring an SJ...

But before that they hated that I drag raced my Mustang, and that I blow money on cars in general.

My g/f's intro to offroading was following OneTon up Moab Rim........ she decided on the best way to describe what was happening to her coworkers back home: "A bunch of guys teaching their Jeeps to be mountain goats."

I've shown the Fall Fling DVD that Troy & Shari shot to the rest of my family. And their jaws more or less dropped.

We took a family trip out west a few years ago, I forced them to stop by Moab for a day. We rented a rubicon and that was my dad's first jeeping experience, he liked it a lot but there was a lot of cursing going on. We tried to take my mom for a short trip but she started crying on the first hill of Hell's Revenge.

Other than that they think i am an idiot for spending so much money on my jeep.

when I was trashing my pretty 2001 XJ, my parents and older brother thought I was nuts but never gave me a hard time. I also wasn't living under their roof.

they don't care one way or another and that is fine with me, I don't depend on them to be my riding companions. They enjoyed looking at my pics from BOTW and my brother is happy for me that I am able to do so many "cool" things like this with my fiancee, compared to where he was at my age - married with a kid. that's more support than I need from them.

I'm far from a hardcore offroader, and haven't modded my jeep except to add tow hooks and slightly larger tires, but I do like to drive off on logging roads and the like. And of course, a box-stock Cherokee will happily negotiate some pretty uncivilized terrain. I especially like easing over sections that are smeared with someone else's paint and oil. That, and the transverse ditches that the forest service likes to put on some of their roads to control erosion and thin out the traffic.

Anyway, my wife thought I was a little nuts until she took up photography, and got quite used to the idea of our being able to dive into some unlikely hole in the woods. She's warmed up to the Jeep a good deal.

My folks are in FL and retired, so their input is niether requested nor offered.

My brother went with me on a local trail last Labor day and had a ball, unfortunately he's in MA.

My 15 year old twin daughters just don't get it. One would rather be home in the A/C listening to music and writing stories and the other would rather do anything else, as long as it was in total comfort.

The only one who wants to go is the soon-to-be ex-wife. Even with that going FOR her, I aint taking her....

Do what you like for yourself. Find friends that share a common interest. If you waste time trying to convert others or compromise you'll never be truly happy.

My wife went out on a 1-2 rated trail with me when the XJ was one week off the showroom floor. She said it hurt her back to much and hasn't gone since.

My sister went on the same trail, and later to Moab with me, she now is a member, posts as rightseatsis and has her own 01 XJ. and as much as I hate to admit it, a better driver than me off-road.

My third daughter likes to hang out around the camp fire but has not gone on a trail in awhile, she used to ride in my CJ all the time.

The other three daughters are not interested and neither is my son in law.

Oh well, their loss. But with me the only one really interested in off-road it is hard to get time away and money.

My dad loved to work on his car and on vehicles in general, so shes happy to see me carry on part of him. It got me into Mechanical Engineering, so thats a plus. But I figure it like this...parent could get all pissed at their children choosing to "mod" their vehicles, OR they could be happy that theyre not spending all theyre money on drugs huh? He'd raced Lolas back in the '60s and '70s, but had never done anything like this - and liked it. He gets it. My Mom has never been on a run with me yet, but we'll fix that soon enough.

I emailed the following picture to my mom with only the subject "Hey mom, I found a new favorite Jeep trail."

I didn't hear from her for two days.
She finally sent back a 4 page letter carefully explaining the evils of off-roading and taking such risks when I had a family to support...etc. etc.

I can't remember laughing so hard in a long time.

It took me a long time to explain to her that it was not me in the picture, and that I would never take such a risk.
And, that the picutre was actually a fake
(Note: I have confimation directly from WARN that this picture was fabricated for a poster of theirs. )

===

So if you want a good laugh (at the expense of mom's nerves)...go ahead and send this one to her.
http://home.comcast.net/~mypcwrench/JeepOnEdge.jpg

FYI:
For those of you wanting to know more about the picture (I did speak to a marketing rep at WARN about it):
He said that the picture was taken in the '70s (he did not have the exact year) on a trail in Washignton State.
The actual trail is twice as wide as in the picture.
It was edited in the days before photoshop.
They used an exacto-knife to carefully cut/trim the trail to look narrow.
They then pasted a picture of a forrest behind the main picture.

I meant he had bad taste in Honda, not german sports cars. That audi we had when I was a tike was fun when it was running. Didn't really have much power, but once you got going it was a damn tank on wheels. It was a quattro and I was amazed at some of the snow it could go through. He works on just about anything, but I see alot of Porsche's in his shop, so I'll get the opportunity to test drive them once he's done working on them to make sure it's fixed, and i'm a big fan of a good 911.

The Honda however, is a 4 cylinder Accord. The only thing it's got going for it is it's a manual tranny. Other than that, BORING!!! I've driven it a few times and it just feels real cheap, I don't like how it handles (I even got him to admit the handleing sucks on that thing), and you gotta run the piss out of it to get anything from it.

burbon... thanks and there is no need to worry about that. She even sat in my Jeep in the 15-20 degree weather wrapped in a blanket holding the light for me while I put the dash back together... dedication :eeks1:

I'm really sad to hear about this... And yeah I know I am revamping an old thread(I had a lot of time on my hands at work, so I started archiving)-
Anyhow, I bought my first XJ a few years ago when I first started dating my wife (we've been together 5 years and married for 2) and it really brought us together more. We started planning weekend trips to different locations and working on the Jeep together. She isn't a big fan of wrenching on Jeeps, but she will hand me my tools and help in any way that she can. She recently helped me put on my rock rails at the house- it took about 3 hours, but she was dedicated. Her family is totally supportive of exploring and such and her sister loves to go "wheelin" as much as I can get her offroad. My family thinks I am a little silly for spending some money on the Jeep, but they all own big 4x4 trucks(I grew up on a farm in S.C.) so they understand.

It's really too bad that you have to deal with that kind of negativity, but they will realize one day how much they missed out on by not getting to know more of who you are and what your interest in what/why you do the Jeep thing.

Just remember: F%@k 'em if they can't take a joke. Enjoy what little bit of time you have on this rock/sand/mud strewn planet and tackle it all while you still can.

Late,
Coullt
