So, I browsed through my parents photo's and came across this. Pretty sure that this is how Rock Pile used to be, but tell me if I am wrong. Definately has changed over the years. Just thought I would share :)

That looks about right, IIRC. The first time I ever went thru Prichett was on a little Honda 125 motorcycle about 20 yrs ago. We drove down the rock pile, then back up it later that day. Has definitely changed.

Jared...once...just once I would like to see you post something that didn't have a complaint in it somewhere.

You have to be the most negative person I know and since everyone says that about me that is pretty bad.

I went down and did metal masher this year. I did it two years ago and attempted widow maker but didn't make it. I bet this year it was another 2 feet taller from all the sand being about a car length back. The picture in the moab book doesn't do widow maker justice. That's crazy that was rock pile back in the day.

How's this?

"Praise the good Lord and Halleleujah that most of the obstacles in Moab have been severely eroded and dug out! That means that nearly all of the usual trails present that extra level of challenge that we hard-core rock crawlers crave! Years ago, we had to lower our jeeps and run worn out car tires on them just to get our thrills. Yuck! Who wants a lowered Jeep?? But not so anymore! Now we can all get enormous, female-attracting lift kits on our jeeps to clear the equally enormous tires required to get up the tall ledges! Heck, I hope the rock pile TRIPLES in size before I run Pritchett again."

Better?

DeadEyeJ

Or....

How about on the next major Moab event we schedule we put together one run where we repair one dug out obstacle by shoveling some of the rocks/sand back into it's original position? I'm all for it, provided I make the trip down.

No...you are being negative again. Look the sport changes with use man. Trails get harder...people build their rigs up to handle them. For everyone who complains about trails getting harder there are just as many who complain because they keep building their rigs up and the trails get too easy for them.

Who is right? I say neither and both.

Do you feel that every trail in Moab should be easily wheeled by bone stock jeeps?

Sorry Jared if it bothers you that some people look at the harder stuff as a challenge instead of complaining about it getting harder.

BTW whats all the XJ HATER stuff? You are on an XJ board or did you forget? If you hate them so much why are you here? I'm not saying I want you to go anywhere else...I just have to wonder why someone would not only hang out on an XJ board if he hates them so much but also why you would buy another one.

People ruin good trails too. Look at Cliff Hangar. Do you have any idea how many people bitched about that trail getting easier? And to be honest its probably about what it was like when they made the road in the first place.

I'll do my best.

Topic #1 - Trail erosion.

I have no problem with there being limitless difficult trails for very well built vehicles. But, nearly all popular trails are constantly becoming more difficult. So where are the near-stockers supposed to go? The only solutions are to keep making your vehicle more capable, or create new trails, which just isn't going to happen.

What I'd like to see is a sustainable model, where easy trails stay easy, medium trails stay medium, and hard trails stay hard but passable. Trail erosion/destruction certainly doesn't do the off road crowd any favors for keeping trails open. I make every effort to not spin tires or chuck rocks when I drive, so as to leave the trail the way I found it. I just wish folks would tread a little more lightly out of consideration for the guys who think "You know, the Rock Pile is probably tall enough." I try hard, and I mean very hard, not to damage the trail when I wheel.

Topic #2 - My feelings about XJ's and NAXJA

I LOVE wheeling my TJ. I am convinced that it would outwheel or at least keep up with any of the NINE Cherokees that I've owned. It was not only capable, it was enormously more comfortable and relaxing to drive off road. Leg and head room were far superior, visibility was far superior, ride quality was not even in the same universe it was so much better.

I LOVED wheeling my carb'd 1985 Ford Ranger longbed. It had HUGE ground clearance. It rode fantastic. The long wheelbase made ledges and hills a breeze. You could take it thru 1' deep holes, ruts and bumps at 45 MPH all day and feel comfortable behind the wheel.

I LOVED wheeling my '87 Bronco II. It could move fast like the ranger, it was tiny on the trail. It had acceptable front flex, and awesome rear flex. It was unique. It cost me $800 and I took the lift off a truck I bought for $150. I could literally catch 4 feet of air and not hurt a thing.

Now for the Cherokees I've had currently/recently -

They are capable wheeling rigs. But, I dislike the coil front / rear leaf combo. Having awesome, buggy style flex on the front and stiff skateboard style flex on the rear is just awful. It makes for a jarring ride off road and causes the body to get tossed side to side whenever the rear drops off/ climbs up a ledge or bump. I LOATHE unibody trucks. It is just foolish design. Can it be made to work? Of course. Does it hold up surprisingly well? Yes. But, it also transmits all kinds of chassis/drivetrain noise and vibrations into the cab FAR worse than a ladder frame vehicle with rubber body mounts. I really dislike the unibody for its terrible lack of easy and strong mounting points for bumpers and other accessories. Sheet metal, even when layered is just not a sensible place to mount suspension, drivetrain and steering components. XJ's have lousy body clearance. My Toyota pickup fits 32" tires bone stock and has more body clearance than my 6" lifted XJ did.

Now as to why I currently own an XJ. Because of the many XJ's I have owned, I have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and a collection of parts for them. They have strong transmissions and torquey engines. They are cheap and plentiful. They fit my kids in the back and the carseats are easily accessible. I really liked the blue color on the XJ I just bought. XJ's are easy to build into a decent wheeler for almost no money with a little ingenuity.

Why do I frequent NAXJA? Because there are a lot of nice people with helpful advice about the vehicle I currently own. It is, of course, a good place to find parts and accessories I'm interested in. I know and like several of you. I feel that I have something to offer to the XJ community in terms of mechanical know-how, and driving/geographic advice.

So, I hate Cherokees. However, they make sense for my family in our current circumstances and budget, so I'm kind of reluctantly stuck with one.

--------------

Now, I am going to make a public and sincere request that you do not create any more posts solely to criticize my opinions about Jeeps or my outlook on conservation, vehicle preference, driving styles, or whatever else I may be rambling about. I have no problem with people giving me/others crap, but sometimes it seems like a more direct, personal stab than it should. I am not writing this out of any feelings of anger or hostility, I just feel like I keep getting an earful.

Okay, on with happy thoughts.

While this happens on some trails it seems to me that the only trails this is really a problem are the ones that are already set up for the true hardcore.

Hells Revenge, Poison Spider Mesa, Fins and things...I could go on and on about these trails that are pretty much the same as they were when I first started wheeling. In fact the only two I can think of that are much much harder is Pritchett and Moab Rim. At least in the Moab area.

What I'd like to see is a sustainable model, where easy trails stay easy, medium trails stay medium, and hard trails stay hard but passable. Trail erosion/destruction certainly doesn't do the off road crowd any favors for keeping trails open. As long as Moab is as popular as it is this will never happen. Especially with the harder trails. The sheer number of people on these trails will never allow this to be.

If this is a problem then you don't have a well ballanced suspension. I used to suffer this with stiff rear springs but not anymore. All it took was a good set of rear springs. It makes for a jarring ride off road and causes the body to get tossed side to side whenever the rear drops off/ climbs up a ledge or bump. I LOATHE unibody trucks. It is just foolish design. Can it be made to work? Of course. Does it hold up surprisingly well? Yes. This just plain isn't true. When XJs first came out they had class leading ground clearance. You can't compare apples to Oranges. It isn't a truck. My Toyota pickup fits 32" tires bone stock and has more body clearance than my 6" lifted XJ did.

Now as to why I currently own an XJ. Because of the many XJ's I have owned, I have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and a collection of parts for them. X-Terra? FourRunner? Excursion? Suburban? S-10 Blazer? I can think of a ton of vehicles you could have bought that would have allowed you to get your kids in the back, still have a frame and 4wd too. Why didn't you buy one of these if you hate XJs so bad?

Look...you are a member of an XJ club. You come here and bash XJs and then get pissed when people bash you back??? What I said to you to start this off was harsher then I intended...I'd had a hard day and your statment set me off and it shouldn't have. For that Im sorry. That being said, if you were to go to a Toyota site and bash toyotas all day long they would eat you for lunch. You should be glad that we look at you as a friend. You can't be part of a club supporting one paticular thing when you spend a good part of your time bashing that paticular thing. We have lots of other people here who do not even own XJs, they still understand where they are and respect that.

As far as the personal stab thing....in what other thread have you felt you were being picked on? Seriously I would like to know. The only other thread I can think of is when we were talking about Skyjacker stuff and I think its only fair to say that others here gave you some great advice on better parts to buy. They surely were not bashing you or singling you out.

I have to agree about the bumpers. The only ones that look right follow the curves of the jeep and that seems to drive the cost up. Well... That or maybe they think everyone who drives a ZJ has a fat wallet.

My time wasted on the internet has revealed a cheap lift where the front coils can be swapped to the rear and some 3.5" ZJ or 4.5" coils can be used for a cheap 3.5" lift front and rear. New shocks and sway bar discos would be needed as well. As for the brake lines, they seem to be long enough for that much lift.

boy it nice to not be the only one anymore. what all have you done to yours?

Most of it has been motor related since I bought it with a bad 5.2, but I've swapped in a 5.9, 3" magnaflow exhaust (cat and back), MSD coil, Accell cap and rotor, magnacore wires, flow cooler pump, 3 row radiator, bigger tranny cooler, 52mm fastman TB and I ported the stock kegger intake. I also threw on some TJ rubicon wheels and tires which rub slightly with no lift. It rides so nice right now I'm afraid to lift it so if the rubbing bothers me this weekend in Moab, I'll probably trim some more.

Of course, I haven't really wheeled it yet so I may find out exactly what you and the good Dr. are talking about with the rear coils.

Are we still off-topic? :D

I've never liked the headlamps of ZJ's myself. Particularly since they fog up so quickly.

Although I gotta say, over the past few years WJ's have been growing on me (I didn't like them at first) and I woudln't mind having one for a DD.

Man, I get here in time to read the ZJ stuff, and now its widescreens... No matter, back to the topic, I really like my 95 ZJ, I've decided for now, that 2" boosters and 31s will be good since it is still my daily driver, but I've got a 90 Ranger that needs some attention, but there is a 86 MJ just down the street I am wondering if I am sane about, thinking I need it, so I don't mess up my DD ZJ, but the MJ is a longbed and long wheelbase so it needs to be shortened and I think a flatbed would be cool, but then I still want it shorter, so maybe I need to ditch the leaf springs and see if I can make a set of stock XJ front springs work in the rear, but I need to buy a welder and other implements of destruction, or is that construction, but I'm back to thinking about my sanity, since my wife always seems to find things to spend my Jeep money on, aw hell its Thursday, I worked 2 hours overtime today, I'm burned out and damn, I need a beer...
