To those of you who are married or engaged how did you pop the question? Simple at a dinner or something crazy? Just trying to get some ideas.

Tossed a ring at her. She understood. But then we're both quite casual people...

I asked her right before thunder over Louisville. Its the opening cerimony for the Ky derby festival. Its the largest fireworks show in the world, at that time of the year until the next show somewhere else adds 1 firework to the mix.

Popped the question in Sedona, AZ.

First place she ever went wheeling, and where we got married. Just asked her on the side of a hill, overlooking the Red Rocks.

HAHA, same here!!

I was planning on taking her to Bridalveil Falls in Yosemite and asking there...ended up going out to dinner instead and did it on one knee with the whole resturant watching...they clapped after she said yes, it was very cool! Here we are 3 1/2 years later and go there for lunch/dinner alot with our 2 year old. :)

Vacation from hell

3 days of food poisoning, transmission went out on the RV, hiking in the blast zone of Mount St. Helens, she sprained her ankle. While I was wrapping her ankle, I said, "It can't get any worse, Will you marry me?"

My story is alot like jfrose's story. I had the ring custom made and had the whole thing planned out with a fancy dinner etc..and then I got too anxious and asked her while we were pulling into the grocery store....I am not much of a romantic you could say! I felt alot safer with that diamond ring on her finger then I did with it in my posession....I was living in the fraternity house at the time..she is lucky I did not pawn it off for booze money and a bunch of one dollar bills for the strip clubs!! I guess it all paid off, that was 8 years and one kid ago...and counting!

Me and my now wife where working on her Cherokee's bumper, and what she didn't know was I placed her ring & a note in her old broken up vacuum canister the night before... when we were removing the old bumper... when she took the canister out, and heard something rattling inside... she took it out, and read the note saying "you've put up with me for so long that I just wanted to say..." on one side and when she flipped it over "will you marry me?" ... she flipped, and said yes...
All i have to say is ask her somewhere, or doing something you both love to do... that way you'll both remember... even if it's ordering a pizza and placing it on top of it and having her open it... (how my father asked my mother) just make it special to the two of you... even if others don't understand why... it only matters to the two of you... and future congrats

I was po at the time, so I asked her at Wal-Mart. I had just talked to her father and gotten his approval and didn't feel like waiting. I bought a 25 cent ring at the machine and when she looked at me funny I asked her. I was gonna get down on one knee right there in the entrance to Wal-Mart but figured she'd probable run.

I was going to wrap her ring for Christmas, but she was really sick. We were hanging out a week or 2 before and she fell asleep watching a movie, and I just slipped it on her finger while she was sleeping. The look on her face when she woke up and noticed it was the greatest.

Rode in on a firetruck with lights and sirens blaring. She was a part-time firefighter at the time (full-time now) so I called her chief and pulled some strings. We were at her family's house and they were all in on it. They distracted her while I ran down to the station and climbed aboard. Her brother is a cop and he "escorted" the engine to the house in his cruiser (lights and sirens also) and got the whole thing on his dashcam. Do something unique to the 2 of you, be original, and congrats dude.

Ha!

Similar situation, Mt Rainier though. :D Had gone camping with some friends of mine who were bickering with each other all weekend and yelling at their kids. Having a shitty time and I had already planned on popping the question up at Sunrise. Well, my wife didn't handle the switchbacks on the way up too well (back of a minivan talking to my friend's wife) and got very car sick. She held it together until we got to the top. She was able to eat lunch but still felt very crappy. My friend started filming the kids running around and I took the cue to pose with her. She said, 'No pictures, my hair is a mess!' I said, 'That's OK, there'll be plenty of time for them later...that is if you'll marry me.' Pulled out the ring and she said, 'WHAT? OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG....'

I said, 'So? Don't leave me hangin'!' 'OMG YES!'

She forgot about her motion sickness after that. :D

I waited until the finale of the 4th of July fireworks was nearly over and we headed into the car, then I just asked her as the last fireworks were going off. We've been together for 5ish years so neither of us thought it was a big deal.

I had been saving for a ring for quite some time, and then spent the saved money on the down payment for a GSXR 750. I waited another month or two and she found a ring on sale and took me to get it. I was 20 and she was 18. Almost 8 years and 2 kids later we are still very happy.

We had planned to go to Newport, RI for my birthday weekend, but I had no idea what ring or size to get. I took her to the jewelery store, pointed to the diamond rings, and said pick one. Of course she picked one way out of my budget, so the owner of the shop showed her the ones in my budget. They sized the ring for her, and we picked it up on the way to RI where I properly asked her to marry me in front of "The Breakers" mansion. About 6 months later, I was able to upgrade her to a ring 3 times the size of the original one. It is now 12 years and one child later, and she still puts up with me.

Did a little treasure hunt thing with riddles and clues that finally lead her to my Jeep and inside the Jeep was a set of keys for her and the engagement ring was on the key ring.

Traditional down on one knee. We were on a picnic and it was our anniversary. =)

Normally I would have done something crazy/unique, but she totally didn't expect it, so that made up for it.

I hadnt asked the gf yet, shes only 17. My roomate wrote a song and played it for her at the park where they went on their first date. The only line i can remember is "I believe im dying young cause its just not right to be so young and so in love." I was my gfs first kiss, so ill take her back to that spot or do it at the 12 hours of sebring or something. congrats btw - for when she says yes....

I DID have a nice little plan that involved flyfishing however the beautiful little cabin right on the river (private access even.....) turned into a s**tbox with the river going at a trickle.

So I did do the traditional down on one knee while we were on a hike outside Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park.

DON'T sneak off with a 19 y/o girl behind her back when she thinks a ring is on the way.......um yeah we will just say this is hypothetical ;) ......

but, seriously, i think the LESS cheesy the better. pick your favorite "spot" and don't "over-prepare".

Good luck!!

Her company holiday knees-up - and probably the most nervous I've ever been (and that's going some... I didn't have the shakes that bad when I did my first solo!)

I was so nervous I dropped the ring. Problem was, we were on an inside balcony - so it didn't land at my feet. Oh, no - it fell down over the railing (we were leaning on it and talking, while looking at the crowd below.)

Fortunately, there was an escalator right there (UP, but it's not like I cared) so I had a way down without taking my eyes off the ring. Damn near blew my knee again going after it... I should have taken that as a sign.

As if that wasn't enough, we were married on 01MAY - or "May Day." Hello? God calling?

Her two kids, her mother, and 10 years later. We're grandparents now (lucky kid - got six grandfolks, and all three of the granddads work in trades...) I've been many things, but never bored. And no regrets (although it's been seven years since her mother moved in, and I didn't expect it to go this long. Mike is about to get a surprise - he's offered to take his mother in before, and we're finally going to take him up on it. Good thing - she's why my blood pressure is so damn high...)

Had a big affair planned in a nice restaraunt, out with a bunch of our friends. Ring in pocket, ready to go - man, our friends were a bunch of crabby ass, lemonade drinking lamos that night - didn't feel right. So I held it in, and the next night I shoved the ring into a brand new carton of B&J Cherry Garcia - As we sat in front of the fireplace, she opened it, shoved in the spoon, and... tears and an immediate yes. It was awsome, and totally off the cuff.

We had been seriously dating about 2 years, friends for 5, not sure when we even met. We were in the back of my brand new K20 watching Star Wars at the drive in. She said "we've been going out awhile"
I said "yeah so you wanna get married or something?" and she said "sure!"

I think I was duped.

Having just spent all my money on new tires for the truck, the ring was on the small side (ever heard of a mirror head setting?). For our 25th anniversary a couple of years ago I told her, Caribean Cruise or Diamond upgrade? We went on the cruise. Little did I know that Saint Thomas USVI is heavily infested with Diamond Dealers...yes she also got the upgrade and I still need tires.

Duped again.

Congrats.

Mine is a fairly complicated one. While my current wife (whom I'd known for a long time as the wife of a cousin) was going though a divorce (cousin cheated, big time, nasty dirty stuff best left out here), I remarked to my then girlfriend (relationship not getting much of anywhere) that I thought my cousin was a damn fool to cheat on a person like that, that I'd always had a crush on her, and I'd marry her in a heartbeat if she weren't already married. During a later phone conversation, the girlfriend (bipolar with a drinking problem, but a helluva good sport and a gracious loser) took the phone and repeated what I'd said, thus essentially proposing on my behalf. "Would you really," says she? "Sure," says I. We've been married 18 years and counting.

My wife used to wear a ring that her Grandmother gave her on her ring finger. Every once in a while I would take it off and fiddle with it, then put it back on her. What I was doing was sizing it to the first knuckle of my finger so that I could give the jeweler the right size!
Then, when we were out for a nice romantic night, I went through my routine of fiddlin' 'round, but instead of returning her Grandmother's ring, I placed the new engagement ring on!!
It took about an hour for her to realize the change, but, boy howdy!! She nearly fainted! Shaking like a leaf, she said "yes!" before I could even ask!!
Good luck to you! You'll need it!

Hey congrats on your direction. My woman isn't much into cerimony. We hadn't been away for a while so I rented a cabin up in Cascade with a hot tub to get away for the weekend. We spent the day together and I pampered her a bit at a spa. I was right after Christmas and I told her the week end was her Christmas present since we had kind of been through a crazy time. I took her to dinner in Manitou springs at Mona Lisa. Wether it involves mariage or not, go to Mona Lisa's sometime with her. Big points!!! I popped the question at dinner. She didn't believe me. She thought I was messing with her till I pulled out her ring.

It doesn't have to be a big deal. Just do whatever you think will make it special for her. That doesn't always have to mean money, or extravagants. It just has to mean you took the time to do something nice for the one you wish to marry. You can see the wide variety in these stories. All memerable for those involved.

I took my wife to Seal Beach, the pier we first went to when we started dating in California. We were looking at the different shells to see who could find the most colorful one-Beautiful night, waves crashing, starlit sky, and a slight chill in the air- I had a clean shell in which I placed her ring while she was preoccupied with the waves and such and said- hey, look at this shell I found. She said yes, and now she is stuck with me....lol.

Creative-off-the-cuff is best and I liked this story the best. As for myself I asked her if she wanted to go ring shopping at a very romantic moment,.... being that it was hers to wear I wanted her to be part of the decision. I also asked her Dad's permission. Too bad I'm single again and the ring is sitting in a safety deposit box,.... that is HER safety deposit box. Ugh

About 24 years ago, I just asked her, having dinner (not even fancy). We'd only been seeing each (long distance even) for a month. Married less than 6 months after meeting. 24 years doesn't seem so long when thinking back on that... Still together.

Asked her while we were fly fishing for salmon. It worked out well. I had the ring in the net (still in the box). I dropped it in after I grabbed the fish out. As I revived the fish, I handed her the net and asked her to look for a fly that I thought I lost. She was on the bank and I was on a knee in the water. The timing was perfect. She found the ring under some grass I had put in the net and as soon as she put 2 and 2 together and looked at me, I had just released the fish and was ready to ask. I had to fit the phrase, "You're a keeper...so will you marry me...yadda yadda" in there. I was nervous AS HELL! I musta said everything right b/c she went for it. I tried to wait for the sun to start dropping down over the Divide and the scenery was incredible.

Congratulations man!! I never thought I'd get married (and told her that when we first met). We made a huge move together to Colorado and it had it's share of stress and I changed my mind after we got through it all. Let us know how it works out for you and her.

My wife was getting ready to come stay with me for the summer between her junior and senior year in college. She was going home for 2 weeks and then coming to see me. I drove 4 1/2 hours to her school, kept telling her I was going to dallas to pick up some neoprene seat covers for my Xterra(which i did), got to her dorm and had them call her down with some wild excuse. When she came down I came out and popped the question infornt of her enitre dorm.

Get her one of the hot sauce packets from Taco bell that says will you marry me on it and stuff it inside the hole for the ring and hand it to her the next time you go to taco bell. Just a thought. I bought a ring once and had planned to ask the following day but one of her friends saw me buying the ring and tipped her off and before I could ask she broke up with me cause her mom told her not to marry here High school sweet heart. We dated for like 3 years and I was 20 at the time. Oh well at least the store took the ring back.

Having saved up for the better part of the summer for her ring, I decided that I had way too much time, sweat, and even blood wrapped up in this thing to just toss it to her. I had made most of my money from racing my bike, so it was only fitting that I would make her traverse one of the biggest mountains that we have here in central PA.

After chuch I drove out in my old cherokee and dodged traffic for an hour or so and used sidewalk chalk to write all over the road. I wrote as many inspirational messages as I could over the 3 mile ascent to the top of the mountain and the last one asked her if she would marry me- in spanish of course (she's a spanish teacher).

I picked her up and we took off to the mountain. It took us a lot longer- like and eternity, and I was sweating bullets the whole way to the top. I wanted to toss the ring to her the whole way, but I waited till the top. She said yes when she figured out the whole thing and I almost passed out from the wait!

Marriage is the best thing ever to happen to me. It takes a ton of work but is so satisfying. Best of luck to you and your lady!

All those are way cool. I had given mine a promise ring then had talked to her dad, I know corney but old fashoned. We went to our usual sat night dinner and I didn't say much. I had mentioned that I had talked to her dad, mind you she was 16 at the time, simply convinced her before dinner that the ring she had was the wrong one. We ate dinner and when we were done I again told her that her dad and I talked and that he suggested that I give her this ring instead, and handed her the new one shich was on my finger the whole time. She was floored with suprise. So here we are 20yrs 6 mos of marriage later. How weird is this tho, my anniversary is 9/11

Congrats on your future

To those of you who are married or engaged how did you pop the question? Simple at a dinner or something crazy? Just trying to get some ideas.
