No ZJ here, but my cousin just acquired a '96 ZJ with the 5.2L and the Full-Time 4WD TC (not sure the number designation...4FT-N-4LO). Anyway, when the Jeep is backing up and turning, something in the front-end will make a single pop sound. The side of the pop matches the side turning (wheels turned right, right side pop). This happens in either direction. It does not, however, occur when going forward. Anyone have a clue?
Shoulda posted in "Other" tech.
Anyway, check the TB frame mount for tightness.
Also check the TREs.

What's the TB?

Tie-Rod ends, correct? This was actually one of my first thoughts.
TB= track bar or Panhard rod.
TRE= tie rod ends.
TC= transfer case.
SB= sway bar.
DS= drive shaft.
There are many more, but that's the few "basic" ones.
