Ok, the weathers warming up, want to get the cj-5 out of storage. Here my ? Will anything off a XJ inhance my cj? IE driveline, will anything off xj fit a cj? I love them both, but the cj seems weak w/the 258 compared to the HO4.0. Oh, sorry, 78 CJ-5, frame resto, 258,3-speed, dana 20, 30 front, factory posi amc 20, not sure of gears, prolly low 3's though. 2 inch lift , 1 inch body, 32's. anyone. please no flame I do have a xj as my dd, this cj is just my baby is all

The square headlights on the XJ are far superior to the CJ's round ones.

the 4.0 shares a bellhousing pattern with the 4.2, or you can put the 4.0 head on the 4.2 and make your 4.2 EFI.
a 4.0 swap from a donor XJ would be quite cool.

manche, so your saying I can turn my vintage 78 258 into an EFI w/some simple swaps? IE intake, head, sensors, ecm. Is this really possible? It seem alittle imposssibal but I'm willing to be a geanie pig if ya got some ideas.

The 258 and the 242 (4.0l) blocks are pretty similar. People use the 258 cranks/rods in the 4.0l block to make stroker motors...
You could also swap the entire engine-tranny-transfer over to the CJ. We had a member years ago roll his low-mile late-model XJ, and built a CJ-6 using the running gear from the XJ. Came out nice too.

I know all bout the stroker thing, but really I am happy with the 258, just want to make more trail worthy, will 4.0 anything fit 258?

No.
But the 4.0L will bolt right in where the 258 was.
258s were great motors but the 4.0L is Superior in every way.

doesn't the CJ have a right side drive shaft tho? I think he'd have to flip the T-case or get like a D-300 with a right side front output.
Well that or just pull the front axle over too, but then I think you'd have to cut down the axle to fit....or just pull both over, as the AMC 20 is pretty much crap anyway and just ride with a wider stance.

The wider stance of the XJ axles would be a HUGE benifit to an old CJ. Those things were pretty unstable stock width.

About the only thing I would do would be to convert the carb to FI from a late model GM throttlebody FI setup. I put a link in here a few months ago with a step by step with pictures on the conversion using boneyard GM parts. Though it was done on an 80 something YJ, close enough. A guy over on www.bmja.org did the first one and a bunch of carter bbl folks quickly followed him, lot less stalled CJ's and YJ's at paragon after that for sure...

I've seen a few articles about putting a 4.0 head on a 4.2 (258), but other than that...not much is going to fit straight across. If I remember correctly there were som gasket mods to the head gasket or something.

the 4.0 head bolts up, but some of the coolant passages must be plugged.
popular swap, you get MPFI, and it pretty much bolts right up.
Find a CJ site, it's popular enough that they'd have all the answers.
