I'm headed to the junk yard this wed and want to find a dana 44 I don't have to regear. I know there are codes on the covers..anyone know what to look for to find the 3.55 geared danas?

Thanks!

well to the best of my knowledge the 44 only came in 3.54 (that's what my 87 has) but that should be close enough. The actual ratio is stamped on the tag I belive its the last few didgits so it shouldn't be that hard to see, no need for any decoding or anything like that.

3.54 and 3.55 are nearly the same. Most automatic tranny equipped Xj's came with 3.54 gears. Pull the cover and look for the stamped numbers on the ring gear, 13 and 46. 46 divided by 13 = 3.54. If the tag is still there it should have the same numbers.
