I have a dog.
I have several firearms in multiple locations (never leave your kids alone at my house)

You know my issues.

Rev,
2nd hand knowledge-my Dad uses ADT at our house. We really like it, their customer service is awesome. It's reasonably priced, and we get stuff like the smoke detector wired into it too, so it will send a signal to ADT if it senses smoke. I would go with them. But remember...that's from a dumbass teenager's point of view.;)

I've been thinking about one too.

What is it that they actually do?
Do you have to have a home phone line?
Do they contact you, or the police, fire dept, etc...?
Do they come in and do a crappy job of running wires everywhere?

There are wireless systems, but that obviously opens more options for breaking in. You should probably [definately?] have a phone-line, otherwise there's no contact with whichever system. Whatever system will call you/police, but first off, the security center will be alerted.

I haven't yet ran wire in a finished house. We tend to install in houses before it's finished.

Don't listen to me too much, I just started working for a security company less than 3 weeks ago.

I am personally a big fan of high-security locks. Bump-keys are getting more popular.

I recommend buying your own alarm system through a local company. That way, you can use whatever monitoring company you chose.

Most homeowners chose to get the "free" installation from ADT, Brinks, etc. but then are locked into a multiyear contract AND overpaying for monitoring.

I paid for my own alarm system. That way I can switch monitoring companies when I chose based on price, service, etc.

Personally, I would never get an alarm system for my house. Most criminals don't target homes and it is an alarm company myth that they will break in in the middle of night while you and your family are sleeping. If the do target a house, it will be while you are on vacation and they have had a chance to scope your house out. Like I said, they are better off trying a small business, car, etc.

Have you seen "It takes a Thief" on Discovery? That dude breaks into houses no matter what time. A lot of those break ins would have been stopped with the propper alarm system setup. IMO an alarm system for a house is a great choice. Rev, My parents had ADT at one of our houses from what i remember everything was great with them. Never "really" got to have it tested out though...

LOL..I guess it depends on where you live then. I still would not lease a system.

Hey,

I've had ADT for about 3 years now. I've been pretty happy with them.

We had ADT for about 4...maybe 5 years in our old house and never had a problem with them.

However, we just had Security Force install a system in the new house, and I gotta say I like the set up a lot better than the ADT. Got a nice little system that talks to you and tells you what door is open, or if something sets off one of the glass break sensors, it will tell you which sensor is showing trouble. I don't know the price off the top of my head as it's my mom and step dad's house so it was their money.
