This has probably already been posted, but I couldn't find it here. Has anyone else seen this?

Ya, the US and Canada is the only place that the KJ is called the liberty, all other places in Europe call it the Cherokee. I noticed this when I was over in Italy a few years ago when one drove past me, I thought I was seeing things at first.

And Ya, it has been discussed on here before, its alright though.

Jesus, it's a Liberty...

That just sucks for them.

I'm not sure how one vehicle can have two different names based on geography.......confusing if you ask me. Why the hell anyway?

Differing markets.

Americans tend to have a longer memory for things automotive than most of the rest of the world - so they couldn't get away with that here. Jeep enthusiasts (something else we have in abundance) would have called for the pillory in short order had the KJ been named "Cherokee" here.

Witness all the furor over the (fourth-generation?) late-model Mustang with the "retro" styling cues. Hell, note all the "re-issue" musclecars coming around - I'd only be mildly surprised to see the Barracuda come back...

This is actually really common with cars around the world. Its called badge engineering. Surely you've recently spotted a Nissan Bluebird or VW Pointer right?

Also, I think the Cherokees complained. I doubt you could name a new vehicle after a Native American group anymore. Someone might take offense.

Had they complained you think they would have renamed the redesigned grands

That's because it's an "existing" moniker, and gets grandfathered in. However, tribes are probably "off-limits" for new makes.

I'd call it a pity - but AMC didn't believe in "planned obsolescence," which is why the early XJ's last so damn long. As long as you've got an AMC engine, you're off to a good start - there are AMC V8s from the 1960's that get used as race engines - considering they've got forged cranks, forged rods, and really thick cylinder walls. From the factory.

Honestly, were I part of a tribe, and they wanted to name a capable and durable vehicle after the tribe, I'd be happy! However, if they were going to name a vehicle after the tribe that was poorly designed, poorly engineered, and wouldn't last worth a damn? Pass.

The Cherokee Nation may have complained because they felt that the vehicle no longer held a useful image to them. Considering it was in production for 18 years - with only minor cosmetic changes (and the damn NVH changes that probably affected longevity...) When did they complain? The timing is likely important...

Your insight into the Cherokee Nations mind is amazing.

Nah - just a SWAG (Scientific Wild-Assed Guess.)

No particular direct insight - just projecting my own opinion, as a student of human behaviour...

I just wish I could get an insight into the collective mind of the Islamic Fundamentalists - then, maybe, a peace could be negotiated so we can all get along...

You guys also notice that the British Liberty's base price was ~$38,700 (USD)?

Here is starts around $22k... I know there's a higher cost of living, but I'd take a "Liberty" over a "Cherokee" any day of the week for that difference :D

Polish??? With a German cross and German helmets? Or is someone in Poland poking a little historical fun at the Germans? That mounting for the pick, though... highlift sling? And the escape hatch for 'deeper than I thought' stream crossings...Brilliant!!

acura calls the honda civic body and trim marketed as a acura something different in canada i forget the name. in the late 1980s A few of the small suzukis were marketed as one name in canada and different name here like the swift, and the geo variant the metro mighta been called a different name. There is probably a few more i cant think of. I think they sold the toyota truck as a hilux in canada at one point, and there is a few classic american iron from the 60s and 70s that had different names in canada. Though the name plates have escaped me i was barley born in the last years of the 70s :dunno: guys in their 40-50's would be more help.

just remembered one. the chevy aveo has different name in the great white north its called a suzuki swift there http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daewoo_Kalos

In Japan, the Suzuki Samurai is a Jimny, Sidekick is a Escudo. Maxima is Bluebird, Tacoma is Hilux, 4Runner is Hilux Surf. I think the Daihatsu Charade was the Daihatsu Naked. There was no Acura and no Lexus. They still sold the cars they were all just Hondas and Toyotas. Honda Integra, Toyota Altezza = Lexus IS, the Toyota Soarer. They sold the mid 90's versions of the Lexus GS, I just can't remember the name.

You guys kind of missed the point. I wasn't exactly clear. Its not important when the Cherokee nation lodged a complaint or even if they did that at all. Im not sure if there even have been any complaints. My point is that you could name something after a native American group in the 1980s and not worry about controversy. That isin't possible anymore. There are certain things that are not considered acceptable anymore. Isin't a Tomahawk an inanimate object. I don't think thats a big deal its an inanimate object not a group of people that might be offended.

Plymouth is gone.
Thank god.
How much I'd hate a new Roadrunner.
Personally I'm glad its called the Liberty here, it just makes things easier for the stupid salespeople who have no clue what a KJ is in the first place. How confused would they be with two cherokees? (no offense to those of you who are Jeep salesmen who know what a KJ is, I salute you)
Was the same problem plauged 2.8 put in the UK KJs? They must be diesel.
