VH1 Classics is airing an older Pink Floyd show. I am full on sprung right now. She's doesn't understand at all and I don't understand how she can't understand. :shiver: Time for another Drumstick ice cream and a Coors.

OK.....I loves me some Big Head Todd and the Monsters. I just had a revelation of sorts. I've never been fortunate enough to see a PF show but as I'm watching this live show, I see a lot of similarities between the 2 bands. I recently discovered a love for music that I never had in my younger years. I noticed that both bands use a lot of incredible back up singers, wind instruments, and the slide guitar (which I heart). Who's with me?

One of the founders died recently, I heard. Unfortunately, VH1 is out on my DishNetwork and the SatTech won't be out 'till Tuesday afternoon. Raise a Coors for me, in memory.

Slide guitar is definitely in. 'Pink' and 'Floyd' are the names of two early blues greats.

Roger Keith "Syd" Barett died. He was one of the original founding members but was only present in early stuff. "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn", was a very famous one, of the sixties, very psychedelic..........and very goood!!
I think the song "shine on (you crazy diamond)" was actually written about/for Syd.

Seriously?
Man...I wish I had been more into music when I was younger. My gal (has been to loads of shows) is dragging me to Social Distortion/Supersuckers tomorrow night. I hope it'll be cool. Not Pink Floyd cool.

Man...I wish I had been more into music when I was younger. My gal (has been to loads of shows) is dragging me to Social Distortion/Supersuckers tomorrow night. I hope it'll be cool. Not Pink Floyd cool. Pink Anderson and Floyd Council/Counsel depending on the historian. They were bluesmen that Syd Barrett considered heavily influential on his music. Syd was almost certainly suffering from undiagnosed (or publically hidden) paranoid schizophrenia, or at least some form of schizoaffective disorder. I used to have a london sessions cd from right around the time they released Piper at the Gates of Dawn with a couple of 8 minute free-form borderline atonal jazzy jams, man that was a good album and I wish I could find it again. Very different from the later stoner music they put out. Their early soundtracks were really trippy too. I once did acid with some buddies in my younger years and did the 'Dark Side of the Moon' played while watching "The Wizard of Oz" thing. It wasn't as good as others had said it would be, but it was trippy to say the least. One friend totally freaked out at the Wizard... good memories... :D
Pink Floyd was a great band, but I'm of the camp of fans who think the band died when Roger Waters left...
Edit: I don't get VH1 here, but are you watching "Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii"?

That was a great article. While I was reading it, the host of the show actually started talking about Syd and his death.

I guess they put out "Atom Mother Heart" in 1970, and Syd wasn't on it...........but remained a big influence. I think "Metal" came after that.........lots of good stuff.
Hey, enjoy the Soc.Dis. show! And the Supersuckers Rock!

So....Waters left and Gilmour came in? What was that about?
I saw the end of a show they were both involved in once.

Well...she's a huge fan and I make fun of them but I've honestly never given them a fair shake. I do like SD but I'm not a crazy big fan. I'm excited b/c she's seen some really neat shows and I haven't seen crap on a stick. She's got a very broad spectrum in music and I'm really beginning to admire it and want to branch out myself.

Hey, enjoy the Soc.Dis. show! And the Supersuckers Rock! Syd left/was forced out before their second album A Saucerful of Secrets. They then recorded "Music from the Film More" and Ummagumma before recording Atom Heart Mother and Meddle. My personal favorite is "Obscured by Clouds" which followed Meddle. Many more followed. I still have them all on vinyl up until Waters left and Gilmour started trying to maintain the same vein to no avail. Some are original releases. I should dig them out again...

Alot of SD sounds kinda the same to me, but it reminds me of my youth, so i enjoy it still. The Supersuckers though, now there's a rowdy bunch.........they put out a country album that i loved, "Must've been High", it's great..........BTW music fans, keep an eye out for a new movie, "The Devil and Daniel Johnston".......the guy is a prolific song writer and very "different" sort of guy, should make for a good movie. I'm sure it won't come to a single theater in WV however.................

I heard Waters kind of went on a religious trip.........I never really listened to much of what he did solo...............
There's a video for sale, "Live at Pompeii".............it's phenomenal!!! Complete with old school trippy visual effects as well as neat footage from the buried city.............good stuff!

Waters' first solo escapade was 'Radio K.A.O.S.'. I've got that one somewhere on vinyl too. Its kind of a story-based artsy album with a singular theme from start to finish. I forget now, but I think its a story about a kid who is mute and a quadraplegic or something. But anyway its got a creepy Speak-n-Spell computer voice for the kid and then its basically about the kid operating a small pirate radio station in order to express himself. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this one).
It just didn't have the weight behind it that fans of PF were used to and so I'm not sure if it failed in the marketplace, but it didn't launch Waters' into continued superstardom a la Peter Gabriel or Peter Frampton. (Maybe he should've changed his name to Peter Waters? :dunno: ). Its been a long time since I listed to that one too. I think Waters needed the platform of the rest of PF to make some really good music, not unlike Jimmy Page: awesome guitarist, but sucked without Led Zepplin.
Personally, I like to chalk up the destruction of good art rock to the invention of plate reverb in the late 1970's. That's one of the recording studio devices that lends that ' 80's sound ' to music made, ironically, in the eighties. Even if you recorded Led Zepplin live to tape in Oingo Boingo's studio, I still think they would come off sounding like Oingo Boingo. :D At any rate, Waters' solo stuff is worth checking out of the library and giving a listen to...
Boy I ramble when I'm hung over...

Don't forget the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking :) It came pretty soon after The Final Cut and it is somewhat in the same vein. I think it is his best.
He came out with a double live in 2000 or so called In the Flesh that combined very nicely his solo work and PF material, including a nice offering from the Final Cut.

You're right about that Mr. Wind. I totally forgot about Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. Didn't it have Eric Clapton on guitar? There was another one after that too and before Radio KAOS. I just dug it out and it came out in 87, well after the split with PF. As I recall, Pros and Cons was demoed around the same time as The Wall, wasn't it? I thought Waters wrote them both, but PF thought The Wall was better and so they recorded it. At any rate I liked the early years better...

yes, Clapton did play on it....forgot about that. It went Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking in '84, Radio KAOS in '87, and then Amused to Death in '91/92. Amused to Death has Jeff Beck on it. (I just broke out the CD's to make sure as my head is a little foggy this morning). No shortage of awesome guitar players there.
Yeah, I also believe Pros and Cons was demoed around the Wall era. PF made a good choice, the Wall is much better.
Did you ever read Nick Mason's book Inside Out? Pretty fascinating read if only to see that pic of Syd Barrett at the Wish You Were Here sessions. It gave me chills.

When you said it went Pros and Cons and then Radio KAOS, I just had to wikipedia the whole shebang because I was sure there was another album in between and it turns out there was, it was a movie soundtrack from "When the Wind Blows" in 86. There were other bands on it too, but it was pretty much Waters in a nutshell. Man that guy has talent, eh?

well done Beej, I had no clue about the soundtrack. yeah, i'd say Waters has a small dose of creativity.

Floyd is awesome! I have been a Floyd fan since I was about 10 (benefit of having an older brother). I saw that show live in Tampa and it was fantastic! I was completely blown away and it is still the best concert I have ever seen.
Waters solo stuff is a little weird for me but he is still a genious! I just happened to have broken out The Wall the other night and listened to it all the way through. I do that every couple of years!

Hard to pick favourites, but here goes (in no particular order)...
"Dark Side of the Moon" (natch.)
"The Final Cut"
"Radio K.A.O.S"
"Animals"
"A Momentary Lapse of Reason"
One thing that I REALLY enjoyed about them - every album was a story. Granted, sometimes obscure...
Probably one of the oddest was that "Dark Side" was about Syd - considering there is, as I recall, an old English myth that when lunatics die, they go to the "Dark Side of the Moon." I'm digging here, but I think Roger did "The Final Cut" about his father, and "The Wall" was largely autobiographical. I can't think of anything else offhand, but I'm sure there were more strange stories...
Pink Floyd, of course, eventually lead into the Moody Blues for me - while I didn't find their ablums as consistently fun for me as Floyd's (shame on me!) there are a number of Moody Blues tunes that I find thoroly enjoyable.
