How much did the XJ/MJ D44 change over the five or so years of its production? The reason I ask is that I just bought an XJ D44 to swap into my 90 XJ. I have a 90 FSM, which covers the MJ D44 for that year. Besides the obvious differences (spring-under, height-sensing proportioning valve), is there anything that will have changed between an 87 D44 and a 90? I'm mostly hoping that I can use the FSM to reassemble the D44's brakes.

Probably nothing changed.

I was guessing that that was the case, just looking for a second opinion. Thanks!

you can also use the diagram for the matching d35 year. Other than drum width they're the same.

That's good to know. So I can just pull off one of my D35 drums and look at that to make sure I'm getting the 44 assembled properly.

yes, the basic design of drum brakes is the same between the two axles. I think they even use the same hardware kit.
Check out autozone's website, under the repair infor section. it's like an online haynes, it has decent pictures.

You're welcome to look at the pictures I took of my XJ D44 before I tore the brakes apart. I used these pictures for reassembly.

If you are going to do your rear brakes, measure the diameter of the inside of the brake drum first. Most D35 are of the nine inch variety, but there is a ten inch version out there. I believe that they were part of the tow package which included the D44. Everything will look the same but you will be really pissed if you have to run to the parts store twice.
