I am back to being XJGrl for at least a few weeks :sad1:

See: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=137596

Synopsis --

@51 miles the transmission failed and needed to be completely replaced.

@ 1200 miles somethin in the front axle broke and it needed to be replaced.

@ 2200 miles the electrical control module for the vehicle was deemed defective.

@3200 miles ---------- The VW is parked out front of my apartment awaiting buy back by VW. I know it's a lemon, they know its a lemon --- and now I know that I never should have bought a VW!!

Spare your fingers -- I dont need the "I told you so" posts -- Just trying to share my horrific story with people who may actually listen (unlike VW customer care).

I'll be back in the Jeep until VW gets my downpayment $$ back to me -- then I'll be shopping for a car again. Who knows what I might end up with this time?! Honda, Toyota, Acura?!

Odd. A friend of mine has a TDI with over 100k on it. It's got some issues, but they're mostly self-inflicted.

Seems to be win or lose with VWs -- on tdiclub.com people seem to either have "good" cars or "bad" cars -- I think mine was built on a Friday at 4:45pm.

I have no doubt that the ENGINE would have gone for 300k probably -- but the rest of the car was falling apart before my eyes.

Never again!!!!!!!!!!

Well -- so do I now. Last night I plastered the VW with signs that say various bad things about VW -- until it is out of my hands, I intend to use the car itself as bad PR -- then Ill move on to bigger and better means of communication.

Keepin it low key until I get my $$ back.

Yea, VW's and Audi's seem to come in two flavors, lemon and cherry, VW's seem to come mainly in lemon flavors. My neighbor has like 4, two vw's and two audi's and spends alot more time fixing [not maintenance, fixing broke stuff] than I do on 3 jeeps. For a while there he would run over and ask what broke and I'd say 'nothing' just doing maintenance..he kept getting this dissapointed look so the last time he ran over to check I said the oil filter broke [purolator pure one] and I was replacing it with a K&N, then to make him feel a little bit better I told him the headlight retainer ring had broke and I had to fix that, then one of the fender flare extensions broke so I was taking both off [TJ not XJ, the little ones on the body held in with those $#%$## nut inserts, 6 of them bastards].
I almost made his day when I had the engine replaced in the XJ with a jasper till it registered in his mind that I had 300,000mi on it...all his are 50K and under...
For a while there I thought he'd bought his own roll back it was in his driveway so often.
I think I'd go with a Honda civic, those are nice and have good trade in. Also some of the Honda dealers have clubs and they open their bays to members on sundays so they can do maintenance, at least the honda dealer in Phillipsburg NJ does.. The civic SI is nice and for $20K not bad at all..

Got 164k on my 1996 ZJ that is my daily driver, (although I only get about 18-20 mpg), and it still runs strong and trouble free...FWIW, stick with Jeep!!!

Good luck with V-dub! :)

Back in the '70's when gas prices jumped my Dad decided to drive a VW bug to work and back. We're talking '60's bugs here. He had to buy three of them to keep one working. He'd be in the shop beating on one or another of them with a wrench screaming, "Effing Nazis! No wonder they lost the war!" Except he wouldn't say 'effing'. I cleaned that up. He used other epitaths while working on bugs. His favorites included doing something to a duck (that rhymed with 'duck') and the other involved a horse, but this isn't the den so I'll leave it at that.

As far as what next: I can't endorse anything FWD so I gotta say go RWD (2x4 or 4x4) or AWD. Good luck.

Sorry to hear this Em - I thought for sure that once they got the trans problem resolved you'd be out of the woods. Guess you got the "lemon" flavor like Rich mentioned. It's really a crying shame that VW can't consistently back up an engine as nice as the TDI with a car that doesn't drive you batty/broke fixing stupid little things like peeling plastic, falling windows, broken glove boxes, self-immolating heated seats, spontaneously deploying side airbags, etc. That powerplant really deserves better, particularly here in the States where most dealers don't even know how to properly maintain them (example: many dealers REUSE the torque-to-yield engine mount bolts when replacing timing belts on the Mk4 G/J/B. I've read about several mounts/mount bolts failing as a result) Thank Heaven I managed to get one of the better ones, though mine has had a couple issues along the way.

I'll second the Civic idea - my sister has an '02, and has had absolutely no issues with it. It's been solid as a rock.

Good luck in your renewed search for a DD.

VW's definatly have a mind of their own. We got lucky with my wife's 97 Jetta, 200K and we have only had to replace the starter. The only problem is that the AC doesn't work. It was at the dealer for almost two weeks and they said it was the Fan Control Module, changed it myself for $200 cheaper and it still doesn't work. Now $150 in relay's and sensors it still doesn't work. The dealers suck! Been to two and it's still screwed. Other then that I like it, when it's not summer.

Cherry or lemon -- its true I guess.

As for the Civic -- I drove one this weekend (not enough bling bling for me -- icky cloth seats etc) -- as well as a Mazda 3, WRX, Scion and Acura.

Acura wins right now -- TSX. Ill keep you posted.

Acura RSX-S or Toyota Celica GTS, performers both, fun to drive, look good, reliable names to back them up, can't lose.

I've owned three VW's...i won't make that mistake again. Acura's are great cars...i've owned two. If you're looking at a new TSX, drive a used TL too. The 05+ TL (i drove a 6 speed) is one of the most impressive luxury cars i've every driven (i'd say it's on par with a BMW 540i)

No offence, but that's pretty funny, especially this part

If it's what I think it is, I know where you're going. I had a co-worker at Toy's "R" Us who like to say that, especially if you did something to torque her off:rolleyes:

Actually, it had to do with the horse urinating, except you use the 'p' word, as in, "Horse P###!" That way, because you're ending with an 'ss' sound you spit while you're saying it. The best of both worlds - you get to curse the car and spit on it at the same time.

The duck one I think you've guessed correctly. "{blank} a duck!" Make it rhyme. Alternate that with the horse one, striking the car each curse with whatever tool is in hand and you've got a typical Saturday morning from my childhood. Then reach around to the work bench and grab last week's Falstaff instead of the new you brought out this morning, suck down a good mouthful of dead bees and slime mold and finish off with a fresh round of cursing, this time striking the offending beer can (being very careful not to strike the new beer can). Working on cars is sooo much fun.

hah. Messed up the nested quotes. As far a dad was concerned, anything Germans made was garbage. It didn't make any difference what it was. The only german he had any respect for was Von Braun. He actually worked with him at Huntsville, Ala. on the Red Stone rocket. He likes Von Braun - hates VWs.

Actually, dad's curses were not reserved to VWs. They could be used liberally during any project from cars to laying tile. I knew every curse word there is before I entered grade school. Didn't know what they meant until later.

I had an 85 jetta diesel I threw it out after it turned over 300k because I hit the side of an f150 and decided it was not worth fixing.

Cherry or lemon...

IMHO: Test Drive a subaru
I am 100% satisfied with my subaru legacy. And my bro likes his WRX.

Nice car. The GF has one in black with 60K. Its been in a pretty serious front-end fenderbender when she was clipped. It was professionally repaired and still runs like a top. Its also nice you got the 4 door. Getting in and out of a 2-door is a PITA. The other nice thing about the Acura is that it comes standard with all the options you could want or need rather than being nickel and dimed to death by add-ons. Oh yea,.... you already bought it!
