View Full Version : Chinaman Gulch Run: SATURDAY, APRIL 21st

March 8th, 2007, 08:42
Its almost time for the CO Chapter annual, unofficial, post-winter shake-down run on Chinaman Gulch.I'm thinking of doing it the second (14th or 15th) or third (21st or 22nd) weekend of April.Saturday the 14th or 21st is preferrable- that way there's a day to chill before going back to work.I would plan it sooner but some people are still building/modifying their rigs.Anyone interested chime in with your thoughts.

Just don't let Frank Z know... He'll make sure everyone in Colorado is there. Just like our last CMG run. :roflmao:

We had 22 rigs on the trail that day.:looney:
I'm only posting this here on NAXJA- not going to post it on CO4x4.;)
note: nothing against the CO4x4 gang- just trying to keep it from getting too crowded.

Was still an awesome day. Not complaining at all. Just seemed funny because everyone mentioned that had been one of the biggest groups in a while.
Need 2 more parts and I should be good to go. Will have them by april.

Don't know how tough it is I haven't run the CMG trail yet. Don't have lockers but do have 4.5" Rusty's lift, jks quicker discos, custom bumpers, (possibly winch by then) 31 x 11.5 x 15 SS TSL's, and pretty sure lot's of help from all who attend if things get tricky, so if you think that'll do I'm definatly in. I do like to include my wife and two kids if that's okay also??? They love to wheel and camp as much as me!! Would also love to hook up with a club to start meeting people with the same intrest, just don't know which one. I live in Longmont, any suggestions....:patriot: Sember Fi Devil Dogs!!!

I did go through that trail last year with 3" and 31's and it was my first time off road. There are bypasses around all the difficult obstacles. I have run that trail one other time since then and was able to take 2 more difficult lines which was really fun. It's very laidback and I brought along my soon to be wife. You'll be fine with your setup. If I'm not chasing trout that weekend, I'll be there again but we'll see. I plan on hittin' the water hard this year now that I'm finally healthy again (at least physically).

YELLAHEEP
March 15th, 2007, 15:23
Yep, huge parking area. Usually the biggest obstacle is the long dirt access road at the gate. If it's been wet, it's usually very gooey and rutted and can make pulling a trailer to the parking area a bit interesting. The access road is bordered by fence and it get's kinda narrow close to the parking area. If it's real bad, there's another place to park right off the highway - or park at the big truck stop a short distance away.

I like to take 25 to the 'Springs and take the Cimmaron/Hwy 24 exit. Take 24 all the way to where it junctions with 285 then take that into BV. Less hills to climb with the truck/trailer, that's why I like that route.

If we have 20 rigs or less we'll be ok as 1 group- we can still finish the trail by 5-6pm (maybe sooner) if we dont screw around too much and if there isn't too much "other" traffic. If we have more than that then we'll split into 2 groups and try to get the first group rolling by 9:30-10:00 and start the second group 10:30-11:00.If we do split ,I plan on leading the 2nd group so if any body wants to step up and lead the first group feel free to do so.We'll have a few newbies/trail rookies with us so they'll need a little guidance and our patience occasionaly. My main goal is for everyone to have a good time and a safe run  .

I'm out. I've been planning on Zac and myself making this run for awhile. However. His music teacher changed his lesson day from Thursday evening to Saturday afternoon just recently. I didn't make the connection until yesterday.
Zac was really looking forward to it, so I don't want to go without him. He can't miss his lesson because he will be auditioning to move from the Vivace group to the Encore group in the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony soon. He doesn't work real hard at school but he does work at music. It's a great program if your kid is into music. The most basic level players in the program sound better than the average high school orchestra.
Anyway, I'm going to start another thread for going wheeling on Sunday up old stage road, Mt. Baldy, or Eagle Rock, or whatever.

Alright you whiners:bawl: :D heres a trip report:
I had a great time with good folks.
Hit the trail around 10:15 finished at 2:40.Had about 15 rigs, weather was cloudy but nice though the wind did kick up a couple of times. No breakage and the trail was pretty dry except around the waterfall of course. Not much other traffic- just a few Wranglers and some ATVs.
Didn't get too many pics but here's some:

Was a sweet day and pretty good turn out. This was the first time on this trail and I can say that the pics do not do it justice! I do want to thank Jeff for the great lead and spotting also Justin for the great spotting, couldn't have done it without! I did manage to make the whole trail without strapping up tho. Jeff I really am going to re-name the " V notch" to " Whiplash" after taking the top of that boulder off with my front diff....unbelievable and thats a D-30 to boot. Everyone was in good spirit and am looking forward to the next meet up....thanks again!:)

I got a few pics too, but since I'm on dialup it'll be a bit before I get them posted. Try back tomorow (later tonight if lucky). It was a great trip, though. I learned one thing: open diffs are not your friend.

Is it just me, or is Terry driving around the V-notch here? Wasn't aware that was an option....

keep your fantasies to yerself... :nono:
Is it just me, or is Terry driving around the V-notch here?
well i'm 0/2 on that line. i tried it last year (unsuccessfully) after watching led go after it. i don't feel too bad, as if i recall it took him a good 45 minutes and he beat the h*ll out of his rig trying. ;)
seems like there should be a way to finesse around it... i'll find it one of these days. :spin1:
(thanks for helping me try justin).
fwiw, both whale rock and that ledge obstacle are much more dug out this year.
