well its on its way to a shop right now, but im gonna see if i can get some answers in advance in case i need them

symptoms: check engine light goes on today, i try to start it and it just cranks and cranks and doesnt fire. i try the cranking 3-4 times for no more than 4 seconds at a time letting it crank.

now, the jeep just gives me an awful violent and loud grind as soon as i try and start it. and of course it doesnt start.

what has gone wrong this time? any ideas?

I'm going to take a wild card guess at this with CPS (Crank Position Sensor). If that goes, the truck won't start (but will crank). Loosing that should also trip check engine light and throw at least one code.

The secondary grinding could be the starter gear no longer engaging fully.

Another possibility might be the sensor for the distributor. I've forgot what that is called at the moment.

Jess has an excellent point as well :).

Bottom line - Let us know what the shops finds.
