This is going to be a long post, if your interested, please take the time to read it, this build up started a while ago, its been on jeep forum the whole time, and its 32+ pages long now. Im going to post the high lights and pics here, and ill add to to it as i progress.
The thread is here: http://jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=255221
well, my street xj has begun, it has actually taken over all funding for the trail rig...
im going to be posting all my mods in this thread, from here on out....ill bump it when i update it.
Here she is, when i bought her, 1988 laredo, auto, 242...for $250

Home and cleaned up, next to my teal jeep, which whats left of the body hits the scrap yard in a few days *sigh* only to be replaced by a tube buggy sometime down the road :)

MARCH 28th 2006
Today, 3/28 the work began, i installed some f150 spring up front, or 250, i dont remember (what ever the guys use for the budget lifts)....i cut 2 coils off the springs, and got about 3/4" drop out of them, a surprisingly comfortable ride, and unreal handling. The uphill "S" turns by my house usually make me feel uneasy at 35mph, were now taken like it was a straight road at 45mph, the fastest the little renix could push the brick.

http://www.tehbaron.com/ryan/images/street/DSC00379.JPG
Ride height is looking like this for now, although the drivers side is still sitting a little high.

http://www.tehbaron.com/ryan/images/street/DSC00382.JPG
I also installed a cone filter just because i had one, seemed to make the engine run a little better, but no noticable power gains.

YAY NEW SHOES!!!
went down to pepboys and got a great deal on the tires I wanted. Had them order them today. Total was $339 and change, $80 each + tax
I also ordered some cregars from quadratec, $220 w/ shipping, so, around $550 for wheels and tires
Tires are 255/55-16 General Grabber UHP (not a great tire, but Ive heard REAL good things about them) They come out to 27", smaller than stock, but i opted for the 27's over the 29's (next size up in the 10" width)
Wheels are 16x8, 5" backspacing

O2 installed
The air/fuel gauge is now working quite well, it jumps around a bit, but, gives me a very good idea of whats going on...
BUT!! it didnt fix my probs, as soon as it gets warm, she shuts off, looses spark to be exact. I think the crankshaft position sensor is getting hot still, so, im going to finally do something about an exhaust.
N2Ojeep, did you ever have an issue w/ the open header, or was your jeep HO, using the holofect sensor?
well i broke down, ordered some 30lb injectors, waiting for them...
did some other work today

with the turbo and pipes inder the hood, where is the intercooler going to go?
theres a good spot under the radiator, but the air is blocked by that pesky front
bumper.

yeah, its probably going to be a top mount. or a front mount w. the bumper cut out

How much has this costed you so far? Is the turbo used or did you buy it new. And do you have to weld your own flange on the header?

its a new turbo, if i had paid for the majority of this, so far id be at about $5000.
the turbo was given to me as incentive to build it.
the exhaust has been the biggest issuse so far.

I did the same thing to my old cherokee that you are doing now. It's alot easier to mount the turbo on the otherside of your engine and just run the downpipe to it. As far as the intercooler, remove your ac condensor and place it there...I had one that was 36x12x3 or 4 mounted up there...
This isn't my setup but it is a good pic of what I'm talking about
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f144/thetvaman/154_0508_turb_01_z.jpg
Instead of running it directly into the intake I positioned the turbo a little differently and ran it into the intercooler...
Are you still gonna stroke it?

how would the exhaust get to the turbo that way?
Instead of going to the back of the truck it would turn toward the front of the truck.

how would the exhaust get to the turbo that way?
It drop down in front of the engine, under it, and runs into the bottom of the turbo

thats 505's piece of shit turbo set up. 90 crank hp from 6 psi.... im expecting 160 crank hp from 6psi
MogifiedXJ
July 16th, 2006, 21:14
I agree, the 505 setup is a peice of shit, but it is alot easier to mount the turbo on the other side of the engine. Plus they run a tiny ass turbo with no intercooler which has alot to do with them only making a marginal power increase. I ran the same design setup only with a t3/t4 turbo and intercooler at 8psi and was probably right up there with you in the 160 range...

From a 4.0? You've gotta be kidding!
The 4.0 starts out with only 190hp in the first place and since 6psi represents a 41% boost above atmospheric pressure, you'd expect a 41% boost in HP i.e. 78hp.

4.6 stroker, with the majority of your mods, and a few more, naimly the pistons installed backwards, and way too much compression, peak boosted compression is going to be ~13.8:1
but after recalculating, i come up w/ 130 now (270hp + 48%(wastegate spring is actually 6.8psi))
again i bow to your wisdom dyno

OK, i got bored. this is a dyno graph that i made, it is not real. at all.
i started with hescos dyno, because my jeep is putting out just a hair more than it, and i applied boost to it (starting at 2100, full boost by 3000) to 7psi
makes 397.1hp@4800rpm, 500.4lb/ft@3100

man, this sounds like an awsome rig you built up, too bad I can't have a look at it. That intake manifold you stumbled upon... Did it really make that much of a difference? I got a Banks header and a bunch of other stuff and I'm rummaging around threads, looking for that missing puzzle peice that'll make my rig fly through the mud like a long tailed cat in a rocking chair derby.

13.8:1 Compression ratio seems pretty steep. Thats gonna be around 203psi inside that engine during combustion. What kind of fuel are you gonna run? Also, is there any risk of blowing a head gasket and/or blowing a hole in the side of the block? I heard that you can put liners in the cylinders. Does anyone know how much the pressure increases after combustion? Still trying to learn a few of these things. BTW, nice project.

Good Lord!! That torque and power is rivaling that of a "chipped" 5.9 liter Cummins Turbo Diesel! Hope you have a good tranny and axles to take that kind of whipping. I know you said the graph isn't real but damn. That Cherokee is going to fly.

Cylinder pressure goes up ALOT...well over a thousand PSI just after detonation, however it is short lived and pressure could be under half that after a half inch of downward piston travel.

well, wiring is in, still have to do the relays, get it started, pull it out, tape it, and put it back in, then think about doing the turbo

spark is going to be the MSD-6AL w/ boost management.
its about $400, but as far as i can tell, worth it.
for now, the renix computer is controlling everything. but i have a feeling that the motor is going to be carb'ed soon, because its an easier set up.
on that note, i got it running today :)
