i am going to herc my floors tomorrow but i dont have any xylene or acetone. the instuctions say to prep and clean using one of these two solvents first. i plan on sanding really well and cleaning. i alrready have primer down. do you think the chemicals are necessary??

someone who has done this before would be excellent.

thanks

i have done it and i followed instructions using acetone

I know that xylene is a very 'hot' solvent. Be careful it doesn't soften up the primer you have on there, it wouldn't surprise me if it does. I'd use either xylene or acetone sparingly. Don't soak it or you will have a mess of gummed up primer.

I just poored the stuff in a paint pan after sanding and went to town. It stayed on there nice and I tried scarping some off and I couldn't get much up...Obviously not the ideal way but it'll work that stuff sticks for a long time.
