Well, it FINALLY happened. And I imagine it won't be the last....

So I'm out walking around the neighborhood i'm reading. I hear dogs bark ALL the time. Well, this time. I heard 2 barks and feet patter. As soon as I turn around, this little fawker was JUST within arms reach, mouth open. So my natural reaction is what? Swing the big ole screwdriver I carry with me(to pop open lids). I cracked the damn dog in the head, he goes to wimper and runs back into the yard he was in. THEN, I hear "don't hit my dog" from some ole' rich bitch. I didn't say one word to her. I immediatly called my office, and told my supervisor what happened. He was concerned with MY well being first, then he told me to give the bitch our office number. I did and walked off.

GA has a STATE leash(sp?) or fence law. Meaning ALL dogs must be on a leash or behind a fence. From what I could tell, the mutt ran out from the garage area in a beeline to me.

When I got to the office at lunch, I had to right a full report and talked to the head of the department.

I can almost guarentee she will try to sue the dept. or something.....
....
so let's hear it. Am I in the right? Would you have done the same thing?

Several of our neighbors dogs have actually run into our garage when it was open, and once, right into the house from the garage. Talk about leash laws! Lets just say my dad wasn't happy. We also get ground squirrels in our garage sometimes too... I really actually hate dogs... : /

Hindsight, he IS lucky I was holding the screwdriver by the metal end, and not the handle. Otherwise I woulda stabbed it. Most of the dogs I have encountered so far, have cowered off when I "buck" at them. But this one tried to get me with my back turned...... that ain't cool.

IT wasn't a BIG dog. Medium sized mutt. If it was a pit breed, she'd be paying my medical bills right now.

hell yes... my dad is a UPS man and deals with this shit all the time... as long as you were not behind her fence and she had a beward of dog sign, you could have killed the little focker before her very eyes for trying to attack you.

Seriously...I have kicked the sh@# out of a dog that came after me. If she can't control it then it is her problem. I know I am insane or suggesting 'personal responsibility' but that's me, complete radical!

A neighbor years ago got sick of the neighborhood wanderer, a rotty cross that would wander into your yard and then bark and growl defensively if he came across anyone. The neighbor grabbed the dog by its collar and locked it to the parking sign on the street with a length of chain and a padlock. We were killing ourselves laughing watching the whole ordeal. I never knew where the owner lived, somewhere behind us, but the dog was chained to that pole whimpering for a few hours before animal control picked it up. We never saw it again. When I asked the neighbor why he did it, he said he wanted to chain the owner to the pole but the dog was the next best thing...

Should get yourself a can of what the post office carries. I saw a Doberman stopped dead in its tracks by that stuff.

Back in '89 I was walking down Main St. in Idaho City, ID at 'round about mid-night. I was bummed because my '68 Fury had dropped it's drive shaft and I needed to catch a flight in the morning. I had called a tow truck from the pay phone at the post office and was heading back up to my quarters to wait for him.

It was a nice night. Quiet, peaceful. A little chilly just a couple days before Thanksgiving. I'm walking along about half way through town when I pick up movement in the very corner of my right eye. I turn 90* right and there's a dog about 20 yards away. When I turned he froze with his tail straight out at half-mast, his head low and his ears cocked forward. One forefoot was off the ground. I'm thinking, "Gawddam, this dog is stalking me." Then I catch another movement, again in the corner of my eye to the right. I complete the 180 and there's a second dog, on point. Dog #2 freezes when I turn and dog #1 takes a step. When I turned back to #1 I had my knife out. Dog #2 takes another step. All of this is in perfect silence. No barking, no growling - not even panting. Dog #1 takes another step and I'm thinking, "Two dogs and a 4.5" boot knife. What are the chances of getting out of this without injury - 'cause I got to catch that flight in the morning."

Then I remembered the half-million candle-power in my right hand. I was carrying my portable spot light, but it was off all this time 'cause my scout-master dad taught me you don't need light if there's stars out. Dog #1 takes another step and I hit him with the spot beam. He didn't like that. When he turned away, #2 followed and I tracked the two 'till they disappeared behind a house.

I tell you what, my hair was standing up alllll over, not just at the back of my neck. Those two scared me. I've been rushed by a dog before but to face one silently, confidently stalking me was something else.

Oh yeah. To answer your question: You did right.

His or the Dogs ;)

Most municipalities require your dog to be on a leash off-property, or verbal command if they are on your property. That works pretty well for me, and my two mutts rairly wander off or visit a walker on the street.

Still when they were pups, they ran up to some old Mexican lady who had just moved in with her relatives and was walking in front of the house. I noticed their curiosity and was working with them, when they broke. The dogs ran up to her and assumed a submissive stance waiting to be petted. Instead she took her umbrella and smacked them hard.
I was never so damn mad at anyone in my life !

Still, dogs coming up from behind is a no-no around our house. My little dog (50lbs) tried that game with me for a while. Usually I would detect her and give a slight backward kick. Occasionaly though, she'd get by me and that little shit would land me on the floor. I finally got serious about it and she hasn't played that game since.

Ever since those "attack" dogs killed that woman in her appartment building a few years back I realize how much danger I was in when a woman leading 2 rotts or whatever by leashes was pulled onto her face and dragged into the street before they got back under control. Maybe she tied the leash around her wrist. Thanks crazy lady, for not letting me die as a child at the park, even if I did startle you and cause you to actually shriek... I still want to kill those dogs.

In 21 years in the cable industry I came across many dogs. I was only bitten twice....the worst bite came from a small dog. I agree, if you are in field, grab a can or 2 of HALT! it does work. The only downside is that a dog will rememeber you after you use it....and you may have to use it everytime you see that dog.
Sorry....I love dogs, but when they come running toward at you, there is not always a clear sign that they want to play, or take a chunk out of your ass.

C'mon now, Rev.
Give the dogs a break.
When they see your ass, they see a 7 course meal.

Okay, four......

Of COURSE you were right! The REALLY smart thing that you did was not get into an argument with her, but just call your office. She may sue, but she isn't going to win unless your office decides to settle out of court. What your office should do is call the local animal control and report her!

Dogs? come on people! Dont be sacred of them. I'ts an animal probably less than half your weight and much smaller!!! Theyre not poisonous!!! and the chances of a 35 pound dog bringing down a 170+ pound man are pretty slim. If a dog charges at me i just plant my boot firmly to the ribcage and they get the message. Im a dog lover, but ive been around agressive dogs and the key is to not be submissive. If theyre agressive, kick the shit out of them. problem solved.
