OK...I know this may not go over well here but I'm prepared for the potential hazing. I have always been a thin guy. My upper body is built more than my lower body. If I wear shorts...it looks like I'm ridin' a chicken. I have a horrible time shopping for pants b/c they all look like they just hang off me. I've noticed that I just don't have that much of an appetite anymore. For breakfast I had a cup of coffee and a bagel. At lunch I had 2 pieces of pizza. I just can't sit down and eat a sh!tload of food. When I'm fishing, I survive on Red Bull and Clif Bars b/c I'm just too darn busy and don't wanna stop fishing. Back when I was logging as much as 300 miles a week on my road bike, I used to drink weight gainer shakes. It worked and I was able to maintain 150ish but they just made me feel/race better on the bike. I drank them right before I went to bed so they sat in my gut all night and got absorbed. They give me worse than normal gas though and so I haven't drank them in years. I'm really gonna try and eat better balanced meals before I go in for all 4 wisdom teeth. I am not working out now b/c that usually makes things worse. Right now I'm about 6' and 160ish. Any suggestions as to what I can do to put on some pounds. Not looking to do the steroid thing just want my lower half to be bigger (not fatter). My metabolism is very high and that makes things worse.
Maybe if I ate more fish that would help?

Ice Cream. Lots of it. I think most guys would love to have your problem plus have a spouse/significant other who lets you bike that much!

I realize that a lot of people would like to have this problem. At 33...I'm beginning to think that this is just how it's gonna be. Percent body fat was in the 5 range the last time it was checked.
I'm not getting crazy amounts of exercise now. I did those high miles for about 3-4 years in a row and while I raced Collegiately and for Schwinn. Now most of my exercise comes from hiking and random rides.
I think I'm gonna try to start eating 4 or maybe even 5 smaller meals in the day and taking weight gainer again at night.

are you trying to make yourself look better or do you really think your weight is an issue to your health?
if its the first one i would say don't worry about it.
and if you really wanna gain pounds i think you're just gonna have to put that small appetite away and start eating more.
i wouldn't complain about the high metabolism either, because i know people on diets working their asses off to lose a few pounds and im sittin there eating a shit-ton of food and not gaining a pound:)

Oh fer pete's sake... :D
Never had that problem. I was always the biggest and strongest of my friends until I maxed out at 5'11". I could eat birdseed all day and never lose a pound. My point is that this is one of those things that is probably more genetics than environment. A bodybuilder friend is naturally like you and he has to force himself to eat in order to gain weight. He eats about 6 times a day and only drinks weight gainer and water. If you really want to gain weight, pack on the protein, eat more frequently and cut out caffeine - its a diuretic and appetite supressant. It wouldn't hurt to throw a little marijuana in there too, might as well capitalize on the munchies...

Some day nature will pay you back and you'll wake up one morning and your pants won't fit anymore...... my cousin was like that, he could pig out on 20 burgers at my dads company picnic and all he'd have was a little pot belly, gone the next day....I hate people like you...:passgas: :D

Not a problem at all my friend. Don't listen to the people who want you to gain lean fat. That's not the way to do it. Go to the gym? You should.
There are 2 routines I would specifically reccomend to you: Ether Mark riptoes starting strenth or Bill Stars intermediate 5x5.
Riptoes::
The routine is basically 2 different programs on alternate days.
Routine A:
Squat 3x5
Standing millitary press 3x5
chin ups 3x5
Power clean 1x5
Routine B:
Squat 3x5
Bench press 3x5
Dead lift 3x5
Dips 3x5
It works by following this 2 week schedule. --
Week 1:
Monday - Routine A
Wednsday - Routine B
Friday - Routine A
Week 2:
Monday - Routine B
Wednsday - Routine A
Friday - Routine B
You need to eat in excess to gain usefull muscle tissue. Try to aim for 4-5k calories. You want ~1-2grams of protien per body lb. Eat lots of carbs, and devide you're meals into 8. Drink about 2 gallons of water a day.
Remember, lifting weights don't make you big! You're diet combined with lifting weights makes you big. Just eating and not lifting will get you fat, and just lifting without eating will just get you strong. You need to eat more than you're body needs for every day activity! Not doing so will be counter productive!
And remember It's not too late at you're age to get great gains/
btw, I started on the same program I wrote for you above and made HUGE gains. In 6 months I gained about 12lbs of muscle. :)

It's actually funny. Lawn Cher and I went fishing when he was out this way and he packed sandwiches and all kinds of goodies. He even said I looked like I never ate. I guess I see it this way: You can't eat a big ol samich AND cast to trout at the same time. I know I wont gain weight eating...never have. Might as well spend more time having fun.
I don't think she'll be OK with me smoking pot so I get munchies. :)
Tonight she made me a big huge buffalo burger and a massive salad AND one package of those alfredo noodles that you just add the water and milk and cook. I am having a milk shake now. She doesn't care how I look but it would be nice to be a solid 170 if the extra 10 were concentrated in my thighs and ass.
Anyone want a picture of me for their desktop? I can fit a full body shot onto a popsicle stick. :viking:

MDL...I'm actually happy with how my toes look. No need to get them ripped. :viking:
And what's this "at your age" crap? I'm 33 for cryin' out loud.
Seriously....thanks for typing up those 2 routines. Since the school I teach at is just a few blocks away, I should probably get in there to the weight room 3 days a week if I bump up the calories a lot (which I'm going to try and do this week). Gonna give this a shot for 4 weeks and see how I feel. Maybe I should post up a pre-workout beginning photo to go with the one of me that's floating around here somewhere?

I was pretty much the same weight from 22 to 42, then I started homebrewing. Now, if I'm not working hard, I'll put on the weight real quick...

I say "At you're age" because over at the bodybuilding forum we allways get people who think since their older than their teens or mid twenties that they missed out on the whole thing which coulden't be further from the truth.

I have no sympathy or advice. Over the 2005 calender year I logged about 5K miles on my road and mountain bikes (combined) and hit the gym a few days a week. Now I'm back in grad school and gained back 13 of the 18 pounds I lost over that year, and only get to look longingly at the people bike commuting to work. I haven't been outside on my road bike yet this year, and I've only done about 10 miles on the mountain bike.
Good luck though!

hell, I weigh 209 and am about your height, my dang cartiologist wants me to lose 40 , I just keep thinking I am gonna look like a crack addict if I do it When my doctor for the last 5 years first met me, he told me I'm obese just because I'm 5'11" and 240lbs. He said for my height I should weigh 175lbs. I brought a picture of me in from late high school and he said that's what I should be shooting for. I pointed out that I weighed 200lbs in the photo. He was surprised and then said that some people weigh more than others with the same amount of body fat - related to the weight of muscle (5x that of fat) and bone. Turns out I really am big-boned...

150-160#? I haven't weighed that since middle school... I was a BIG sprinter (and an oddity!) at 6'3"/225# in high school...
Fighting weight for me was 275#, and I've yo-yoed for a bit until I've settled down now to around 250#. I need to convert a bit, but 250# is a comfortable weight for me, and my doctor(s) don't give me any grief about it (also, my cholesterol is good, and I'm not pre-diabetic - I just had blood work done a few weeks ago.)
Genetics is going to be a HUGE factor - what do the rest of the men in your family look like? Granted, that idea doesn't work well for me either - I'm a throwback. Largest man on both sides of my family for at least four generations... So, genetics is a factor, but don't discount freakishness...

Muscle weiges more than fat. Even muscle tissue isn't a good indicator. Differen't dencities of muscle weigh more than others depending on how developed they are.

I don't know if I'll be heading up your way anytime soon, but let me know if you come down this way, and I'll take you up on that.

Ironically, I don't ride all that much out here. I have miles and miles of incredible MTB trials and can do road rides in the mountains. BUT...racing at the level I did for as long as I did really cooked me. I ride every once in a while now. Work is only a few blocks away so I can walk there. Hell...I can walk anywhere in town in 20 minutes. I'm sure I will always be a skinny ass.

Have you seen a doctor about this? 5% bodyfat seems exceptionally low - like eating-disorder low. If your doc is okay with all of this from a health standpoint then thats good, but I'd be getting checked out if you haven't already. I don't want to be that skinny, but I'm supposed to lose 75-100 lbs (5'10, 265) and there are days I wish I had your problem.

You had to drag me into this, didn't you, skinny ass. Hey, I offerred to share, did I not? As the great Cartman once said, "I'm not fat, I'm big-boned!"
My doctor wants me down to 180 lbs. With my build, it ain't gonna happen. I'd be happy at 200.

Planerepairman...I got nothing from that link but it could be because I have a Gateway that doesn't allow me to browse the internet likemost others.
Spudboy...I assure you...I don't have an eating disorder. I'm just somewhat of a genetic freak. 6' 160 is not exactly crackhead status (eventhough I don't care for it).
And you....Lawn Papasan...you were very gracious with regard to your sandwich. You, sir, are a true gentleman.
I had more to eat last night than I think I've ever had. I am still full this morning. It's gonna be ugly in that bathroom later when the gut grenade go's off.
