Cherokee Crawl 2007
JULY 12 - 15

The South Eastern Chapter of the North American XJ Association (http://www.naxja.org) is inviting all NAXJA members, non-members, and their families to our annual super long weekend of trail riding and camping in the TN/NC hills.

Any Cherokee can have fun on the Tellico trails but you should have aggressive tires and proper recovery/saftey equipment. For the ones with the built xj's...think your 36" tires, dual lockers, winch, etc. is enough to get you through the hard trails? we'll see. And if your XJ is in the middle of modifications/broken at the momment? NO PROBLEM !! Just go to your neighbors house...con him in to going, then offer to spot for him. The important thing is you get out on the trails during the day and socializing at night...its all part of the :NAXJA: Cherokee Crawl experience.

Speaking of trails. If you havent been to the Upper Tellico OHV area...big rocks spread liberally over hard packed clay trails make for a fun ride...when its dry you'll climb trails you might not have imagined you could...if its wet? hold on tight, smooth rocks and clay turn into smooth rocks covered with axle grease.

ACCOMODATIONS

The majority of the Crawl attendies traditionally camp at Crawfords Campground. Its the closest campground w/ conveniences close to the trails. what will the safety checks be? Plus my jeep is trailered so I have no tag for it or insurance, is this a problem? I have seat belts full exo cage, locked front and rear 39.5" tires and would like to come and play. I could probably only come for the weekend, maybe that friday also.

OK, just how hard are these? I would really like to go... but I'm running 31" mud tires, open diffs both ends - 3" lift... no armour, will have tow points on both ends by then...
I have a lot of experience in mud, none on rocks...
AND this is my dd -- so i can't break it too badly...
Will there be something for someone like me to do here? Or would I be sitting around watching the whole time?

there is great trails for every level of vehicle and there is no reason you "have to" damage your ride. We usually split up in to groups vaguely based on vehicle ability and what trails we want to try. Some people just trail ride to where the harder obstacles are to watch others try them (lower 2, slick rock, guardrail...are all easy-ish to get to and fun to watch people attempt. We did that our first year.). It still takes 4-8 hours generally. We take care of each other pretty well. Always ok to ask for a spot or a strap. My wifes xj was on 31" truxus mt's her first time there with no lockers and I seem to remember having a good time the whole weekend.

It can take a whole day to negiotiate a trail, especially if your being careful. Wear comfortable shoes and plan on walking alot as you check out obstacles ahead of you and spot for your new friends. My family takes peanut butter, jelly, and a loaf of bread with us....and water...it takes about an hour just to get up trail one to the harder trails, so you've got to kinda plan on being out there. Throw a sleeping bag in the jeep too....we dont leave anyone behind but it can get cold at night...(Its always awesome to see the rescue convoy coming when you've been limping battered jeeps down the trail for a few(14) hours...if the significant other is coming make sure you've prepared them for the idea that this could take a long time, be bumpy, dusty/muddy, and you'll be sore at the end of the day...I preload motrin before I head out :) and make sure relaxing cold drinks are waiting at the camp site to easy my aches and pains.

Make sure everything is secured in the vehicle too...no loose coolers or tool boxes...MOST people never plan on a wreck or roll over but if it does happen you dont want people getting injured by loose gear...even your flashlight could leave a good size welt/chip teeth.

As for equipment.

Front and rear tow points,
fire extinguisher in a mount,
Spare tire (your not getting off the trails easy with a donut....better make it a full size spare)
Jack appropriate for your vehicles size, and lug wrench(make sure you've got the key to your lug locks too)
Tow strap
Your basic kit of tools, fluids, and spares for things you've broken before and might break again. :)

As for trailered in rigs...I think as long as you have the safety equipment you are ok. Legally getting your heep to the trail head is up to you.

I'm surely forgetting something. Kudzu or Ghost will no doubt remember lots I'm missing.

If I'm not in too much trouble for killing my alternator this morning (the 1st time I've been off-road since the new tires and lift), then this is definately in the plans... Wife seemed pretty good with the idea last night... but wasn't too happy when I came home from wheeling with her brother and told her I had to get an alternator this weekend...

yellowxj
February 17th, 2007, 14:52
the good thing about the alternator is if you buy a lifetime warranty one, atleast its the last time you have to buy one. :)

Honestly there are some trails you can run open on 31's but dont expect not to get any body damage. To me Tellico = Body Damage....

Its fun and my jeep is my DD also. I drove it 250 miles to the trails ran Guardrail, Helicopter pad, Slickrock and Lower 2 and drove it 250 back home. BUT, I did get some body damage and flopped it on this last trip.

If you want to see a few pictures check out my sig and go to trail rides and check out tellico from November. More from this January will be posted this week.

Since you have like 5 months why not try to get some lockrights... only about 225.00 each shipped.. I promise you it will make the trip a whole lot more fun.

Theres one safety tip I can think of.
Have your battery fastened securely.
Bungie cords, electrical wire, coat hangers, etc.
just dont get it.

February 17th, 2007, 20:21
our first trip we bent a cheapo nerf bar...that was it...although if you do get a good dent...atleast it was at tellico trying harder trails than your used to.

the good thing about the alternator is if you buy a lifetime warranty one, atleast its the last time you have to buy one. :)

Read the fine print on that lifetime warranty. They replace it one time and then it turns into a 90 day warranty. I have a junk radiator (second one to go bad) that the parts place won't replace.

I'm hoping to run up school bus on Thursday...more fun will be driving down helicopter and guardrail (with a safety tether of course, but I still want to see if it could be driven by my xj)...if all the junk is together after that then maybe lower 2 and upper 2 on Friday? That would be a fun couple days....

My xj is mostly all stock other than a few mods. Hope to have 3inch lift and some TSL's on by then though, and my bro has a wrangler, would any of these pose a problem. Also is there a river or a lake near by to do some fishin??

I think that is only until you get to the "pay station" up top. Also the trail fee is now 10.00/day.

Will this be a fairly "family friendly" event. I have youger children I would like to bring along. Moderate beer drinking is no issue, but I don't want to expose them to a drunken/rowdy party-type atmosphere just yet. We love the outdoors and camping/hunting/fishing, and are starting to learn to like the off-roading world, there is simply an innocence in them that I am trying to preserve a little longer.

Thanks

great for the kids..usually a big knot of kids around the tv at ghost site watching kids videos at night and playing on the playground during the day...a little hard on the kids on the trail rides cause the grownups are concentrating on the trail. My kids are really in to watching the jeeps and theres plenty to keep them occupied if they arent watching the jeeps...

I really enjoy this event because its hard to let go of work...but when I'm there its all about the wheeling and the friends so I can forget about work...and we have to be quiet at night cause danny the campground owner likes it quiet.

Maybe I ll be finished by then...rock rails anyone tell how they attach. I want to fab my on and not sure how to mount them...yes I am noob and never looked at anyones. :)

I'll be at Tellico that weekend but not officially with the Crawl. A buddy of mine is getting married so we're hauling him up there for a weekend of wheeling and hanging out at a cabin we got in Tellico Plains, TN. Don't know if I'll be bringing our XJ yet or not. Maybe I'll catch some of ya'll on the trails sat. We will be headed out of Huntsville, AL friday around noonish and coming back sunday sometime.

I'll be in the Lapis Blue XJ on 33's. Other vehicles would be a silver Rubicon Unlimited on 35's, red 4 runner on 36's, red YJ on 36's, and a few others.

Yea it ends when it is built enought to not break! As for the rock rails you can search in the mod section under my username and there should be some pictures somewhere.

I'd love to go, but i might not be able to make it up until friday morning. Would that be alright? I have a DD on a 4.5" with 32's and i'm just double checking to make sure there are trail where i won't bang up my XJ too bad. Just let me know. Thanks

You'll be fine...It ispossible to bang it up but if you take it slow and have a good spotter you'll be surprised where all you can go.

As to coming up on Friday no problem...a lot of people come in late Thursdy night Friday morning.

Thanks, do i just go to the tellico website and contact them to reserve a campsite? As far as safety stuff goes, is everything i have to have; towhook, recovery straps, ect, listed somewhere so i don't show up and don't have something? Thanks

E-Mail them your reservation request here:
http://www.crawfordsattellico.com/

A good rule of thumb when attending a trail ride is to bring along:

1: Recovery straps (the kind without metal hooks)
2: Tree strap
3: Sturdy hook points front and rear (a hook simply bolted to the XJ's uniframe will not suffice here-it can rip out at the most inoportune moment and potentially hurt someone)
4: Hi Lift jack strongly recommended
5: Full sized spare tire
6: First aid kit that includes insect and snake bite meds
7: Plenty of food and fluids (you never know when you may have to spend a night in the woods)
8: CB radio strongly recommended
9: Extra fluids for your XJ (1 quart each for axles, engine, and trans, along with 1 gallon of coolant)
10: And the most important one of all: Bring a good attitude!

Wish i could go! I recent bought my XJ, and have yet to build it at all, other than the 29's I took off my wrangler. And i wont have my lift or tires for another 6 or 7 weeks...money's tight for an upcoming college freshman! So...maybe next year!?
