On the pic of the ax5/15 it show were the I.D.....tag is will it say what it is or is it some code
It will have a code. Read the text in the top picture, and it explain the meaning of the code. You should be able to simply look at the tranny and see the difference between the AX and Peugeots, with the help of the two pics.

they didn't put a AX15 in until 90 and the AX5 was only in the 4 syl XJ.

just want to now what i have.

has any one seen these number below the fill plug or is it actually in a different place?:dunno:

If the Jeep was made in late 89 it will have the AX-15, my MJ was built in 2-89 and it had the BA-10, my donor XJ was built in 7-89 and it had the AX-15.

OK I'm pretty sure that it is an AX15( date of manufacturing 6/28/89) ........but i would real like to be sure........is it a tag or is it cast in or stamped in the case of the tranny?

If its a tag the i Know I'm S.O.L.....I just need to now!

It's been rebuilt......a... Ya some one has been into it, because there is red silicone in the seams of the tranny.
I just wonder if some might have put in an AX5.

Thanks

jumping in late on this thread, but what engine do you have? If it's a 4.0L, it won't be an AX5 behind it. It'll be an AX15.

And on a side note, the AX5 and AX15 look almost identical (they practically are). One of the obvious identifiable differences between them is the intermediate plate. The AX15's is aluminum, and the AX5's is steel. If it's rusty, it's an AX5 (or you can use a magnet to check).

Jeff hit the nail on the head. Check the intermediate plate.

It's the thin metal plate that covers the opening in the front of the tranny. The front of the tranny bolts up to the motor. Part of the tranny bell housing hangs below the motor, which is why you need the intermediate plate to cover it up. You will see two big bolts at the bottom of the intermediate plate where it bolts to the tranny.

If the plate is aluminum, it's an AX-15.

Close, but I meant the intermediate plate that is sandwiched between the front half of the tranny and the rear extension housing. It's about a 1" wide band between the two pieces....if your tranny doesn't have this plate, then it's a BA10/5 (clamshell design)

Jeff

edit: here's a good pic of the AX5 from the Novak website. The intermediate plate is the dark band around the case:

here's the AX15, for comparison (harder to see the plate):

I would still like to find the date plate by sence i now that it is AX15 i will just look harder when i pull it to replace my "Knocking and trying to get out Peugeot"

This should be a pretty staight forward swope...right.
