Mines officially dead. Its not only rattling and driving me nuts, but its partially clogged and not letting me go over 3K Rpm. The xjs barely getting up some of these hills even when floored now. The dealership says its covered under its recall - but said it would be 2 months untill i can get the replacement, and basically its illegal for anyone to hollow this out/make it work in any other way then to replace the cat. I figure if i can find a working unit that someone replaced when they setup their exhuast I would be able to pass both visual and emissions testing.

If you cant find one used hit up one of the local race shops. I was failing emissions. I checked at the steelership for a cost of a stock cat and they wanted almost 400 bucks for my 1990 XJ cat. I went to Lopers and picked up a universal high flow cat and a couple of tube adapters from pep boys. Total cost was just under 100 bucks. Passed emissions..

Good luck, Andrew

Where is the O2 Sensor bung? I'm not sure if the 2000/2001 models were any different, but if its got a sensor bung on the Cat; i will take the entire setup for 35. Let me know where I should meet you on thursday. I'll PM you my phone number to make things easier.

well a realization... I think its illegal to do this - even tho it would by all means pass emissions and serve the same purpose. So... me being the guy who can't weld (and everyone I know who welds is busy for the next couple weeks) is clueless as to how id get this on. Anybody know of a shop that wouldn't mind cutting and welding the cat or the entire thing in here in tucson being that it might not technically be legal? Or maybe even someone willing to do it down here sometime this weekend?

edit: its just clamps, so i dont know if welding would be necessary to get just a cat in, but i can't remove it - its on there damned good without the clamps even.

clogged cat, dealership couldn't perform the recall (emissions/converter for 96 XJs) for a matter of Months... and with a clogged cat XJs seem to struggle going over 3000 Rpm. Problem solved... my friend at one of the exhuast places is installing a hi-flow for me tommorow.
