I was at work today when a used ZJ grand came through the shop. We had sold the car a few weeks ago and it had developed a growl from the rear end. Knowing that I am a Jeep guy my service writer kicked it to me to diag and repair. I tore it all down and found that the pinion, carrier side bearings, and RH axle shaft bearings were toast. In addittion the RH axle shaft had lost its hardening on the bearing surface and had worn about a 16th of an inch deep groove into the shaft. Fairly straight forward stuff. I went and started to price everything out at the parts department and this is when it got interesting.I work for a ford dealer but our sister dealer is a jeep store, so usually we get good prices from them. I got back a slip quoting me $504 for a single right hand Dana 35 axle shaft. Plus another 700 dollars for all the other assorted bearings, races, seals and the crush sleeve. So 1200 dollars in parts to replace the bearings and 1 axle shaft in a Dana 35. I had parts call Randys Ring and Pinion and we got everything from them for less than 400 dollars. just thought it was kind of funny and wanted to share
