How to verify mileage on a vehicle purchase?

Just wondering if anyone knows a way to check mileage, or at least the last reported mileage that is shown in DMV records? I am in California if it matters. I know I can look at a vehicle and tell what the actual mileage is, but I want to know if it is actually recorded somewhere that I can access?

Car Fax. If the car was bought/sold a couple of times, when it was sold, it should show what the mileage was on that date. It should all add up if nothing funky has been done.

Hey John,

I've been looking for a replacement Jeep. Found a 98 that reportedly had 129K. Checked Carfax and sometime in 2001, the Jeep magically lost 50K miles. The current seller had no idea, as he has only had it 5 months.
