Didn't want to hijack the guys thread... but this one is a bit puzzling, although old school... My buddy found the answer one night... but we were all tanked.. and I cant figure it back out for the life of me!!

3 Women walk into hotel to get 1 room.
Cost comes to $30.
$10 is paid by each woman.
They go to their room.
The bellhop comes up and says "This room was only $25 tonight ladies, so here's your $5 back.
So the women decide to each keep $1, and give the bellhop a $2 tip.

So, if originally $30, and each woman got $1 back, thats now $27... add the $2 bellhop tip.... and youve got what?! 29!!!

Where's the missing dollar?

If they each got a dollar back, it would be 28, because there are three women, not two. Thus with the 2 dollar tip, it equals 30.

Basically... They're playing with your mind...

Instead of adding the $3 the ladies recieved to $25, and then adding another $2 they gave the bellhop... they subtracted it from $30 which wouldn't make sense.

You make that sound simple, but remember they only payed $9 a piece. We know this because they started out paying 10 and got a dollar back. How could they pay a total of 28 but it only cost them 27 (9X3)?

No... They PAID $10 each, not nine. They got MORE than $1 back... they each got $1.66666666 back of which they each chose to give $.6666 to the bell hop.

Quit trying to mess with everyone's head.

If you take the "y" factor and cross it to the conversion process of "M" to the "Nth" power, and then take the results and change the $ to cents and multiply that times your original numerator. Add that along with the denominator, invert the process in conjunction with the quadradic formula, take those results and how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop, divide it by Pamela Andersons cup size..and there you have it....

Exactly. They payed 10 and got 1.666 back. That means they payed 8.333333 a piece for the room, that equals the $25 charge for the room.
They then gave .6666 a piece to the bellhop, thats a total of $2.
Thats a total payout of $9 a piece or $27 total.

You make no sense whatsoever.

30 - 3 = 28?!?!?!

It's not. You misstated the problem.

The problem totals up as:
$25 The actual cost of the room after refund.
+$3 The part of the $5 refund the roomies split
+$2 The part of the $5 refund the rommies gave as a tip
-------
$30 The original price paid for the room.

Trick in bold.
Subtract the tip, and you hit. $25. All is good.

It’s not 30-3+2=29
It’s 30-5+3+2=30

Clear?
