Never ceases to amaze me the bureaucracy involved with trying to do the right thing. It shouldn't ever be that difficult to donate a relic like that to a museum for cryin' out loud.

Hats off to the Officer who actually did the right thing with the gun..... musta been REALLY tempting to tell the lady that he'd come back and pay her for it rather than submit it to the Department's property unit.

On of my Deputies had a similar temptation. He responded to a widow who wanted to have "a little left over" ammunition destroyed that her late husband left in the basement. The husband was a huge gun enthusiast and did his own re-loading with professional equipment. The Deputy who responded was also a gun enthusiast and told me when he saw that she wanted him to haul off three 5-gallon buckets of .223 and .762 re-load rounds, he too contemplated an under the table deal - but did the right thing. The real shame was that we couldn't even use the ammo for Department training due to safety concerns (understandable) but seemed like such a waste nontheless.
