Honda Element hydraulic steering ?

Yesterday a friend of mine dropped by to show me him new 2007 Honda Element. Mounted on the firewall is a huge piston with a lot of hydraulic lines. The pistons tie into the tie-rods behind the front wheels! The power steering pump ( no reservoir) feeds this system. This system did not look like an assist. Maybe the steering wheel ties in from behind? Could some Honda people elaborate?

Sounds similar to the old GM rack and pinion systems that were mounted to the firewall. The steering shaft went through a hole in the firewall and directly into the pinion. They used a standard GM power steering pump, but there is no reason you couldn't get rid of the reservoir with the right valving and recirculation.
