Any of you AZ XJers have any experience with yanking the Peugeot and putting in an AX15? I have read several tech articles that make is sound easy, but they seem to all do that. Any other transmission I should look at? I was looking at changing the gears in my NP231 and if I do that It sounds like I have to use the Peugeot or an AX5 because they run the same input shaft so I better figure out what I’m going to do with the tranny before I drop a thousand on 4:1 for the 231.

I know that tuffxj ( formerly known as ZipDrive007 ) has done his more times than he cares to remember. Infact I think the words he used once were that he could do it in his sleep now. LOL Anyway, I am not sure if he posted anything up about it but look for posts by him about it. Otherwise I am sure he will visit the forums when he gets back in town.

Good luck mang

If you are going to get rid of the Peugot, then I suggest looking at an NV3550. Swapping one in is the exact same work as an AX-15. They are easy to find now out of 2000 and later TJ's. I ditched my Peugot a few years ago for one. If you do an AX-15, then look for one with an external slave cyliner (95' and later models if I recall correctly). For either one you will need to do the following:

Either transmission/bellhousing will bolt right up to the block. Keep existing flywheel and CPS sensor. Use pilot bushing from 72-75 CJ5 with a 304, it's a perfect fit. Use Advance Adapters TJ steel braided clutch line kit. This will mate your existing clutch master cylinder to the external slave cyl on the NV or AX. Much better than the factory plastic line. Move the Tranny crossmember back 4". There are already holes in the unibody frame rails, you just need to tap them (10mm x 1.50). Tranny mount for AX would be just a stock setup (mount plate and rubber mount). For the NV I used an AX15 mount plate and TJ poly mount. Fit the crossmember perfectly. For t-case linkage, an AX will just use the factory bracket from a donor. For the NV, you might be able to use the AX bracket but I just fabbed up a bracket to attach to the tranny. Either tranny you use, you will need to a swap to a 23 spline input in your t-case.

The NV3550 clocks the tcase up higher than stock. Mine clears the floorboard by about 1/2". The swap is really about as easy as you can get for tranny swaps.
