it happens when i first get in my xj and put it in gear i hear a loud clunk that i thin is in the front. and sometimes when i come to a stop light and then go to take off again i hear it but it sounds like it comes from the rear. I have checked the shock and bushing they are all good. Would old brakes in the rear be causeing this nosie???

4.5 re front coils
3 add a leaf in rear with 2 inch blocks " add a leafs sagged"

Clunking noise when you first take off is your rear driveshaft u-joints.
You need to replace them NOW. Normally is only the one at the t-case,
but change them both.

Yep, check your rear drive line. See if you have play in your drive shaft. While your back there, check your axel u-bolts & the security of your blocks :shiver: . Also check Trans mount as well.
