I'm considering going to NAU next year (possibly U of A locally too, but we'll see) and was wondering where to wheel up there? I've seen a couple of the local trails (like 10 minutes from the NAU dorms where my friends live) and they were certainly a pretty drive through the woods...(not very technical from what I could tell) I've also heard theres Cinders Hills, Table Mesa Areas, and maybe some stuff in Sedona thats decent. Where do you guys frequent near/in flag? I'm not asking as if this is a deal breaker between choosing colleges but I've just become curious how the wheeling is up there.

If you love the outdoor lifestyle, and a very laid back POV, then Flagstaff is it.
I graduated from NAU a few years ago, and had been in Flagstaff almost all of my life.
Sedona is always fun. Then you have the Peaks. Nothing too hard, but beautiful scenery. Then you have the areas around Lake Mary, and farther down that road you have the Rim. There is also Mingus Mtn and the whole Verde River area.
Then, there is XJNation's house. That is a trek just to get out there, but when you are on that side of the state, there are some good shooting pits, and even a long distance range.

Good description!:shhh: LOTS of tree-hugger types here that don't like SUVs at all.
There's not much rock crawling around here that's at all technical. Sedona's close by and has some fun trails. Prescott has some good stuff, and Phoenix is not too far away for a wheeling trip.

I saw alot of jeeps up there last time... I imagine if they aren't over by now, then they've already given up their hippie war in that respect and that I won't be harrased too much.

You'd be suprised. These losers protested Barnes and Noble for a friggen YEAR because they "took away the local bookstores".:banghead:
There ARE alot of Jeeps in town though.

thats odd. i do like the smaller town feel, but I think thats nuts to protest for a year. chances of meeting some jeep-driving gals is higher if theres more jeeps in general though right? right. :D

I came up to NAU about ten years ago and never left. We love it up here. It's true that there is not much technical rock crawling around, but there are hundreds of miles of forest roads to explore (which bring deep mud and deep snow:)) There are some areas that are fun to play on. It's not a bad drive down to Sedona or Table Mesa Road for the technical wheeling. Also, we are two hours closer to Moab and Colorado :)!
There are a lot of jeeps cruising around up here and lots of treehuggin liberals. hehe Naw, it's not too bad. There's nothing better than the summers up here and the snow's fun also.

Snow isnt bad when you have young joints that don't ache:D
Summers arent bad, especially when the NAU kids leave, but then again, that is also when the SBIs come into town.

...when the NAU kids leave.
I probably would't be around to enjoy that ;)

True, but you gotta realize that I grew up in Flagstaff, and went to college there as well, so my take on it is somewhat different.

lol, i know what you mean. thats got to make a huge difference when the NAU students take off - especially in a smaller city I'd imagine.

So how many XJ'ers do we have in Flag? My family has a weekend house up there that can sleep about 8... So if any of you want to organize a wheeling trip up there without having to sleep in tents or hotel rooms...
