factory drain plugs

i pulled the rear carpet section out of my 97 xj to start to herculine it and removed the rear drain plugs, problem is the two rear plugs were smushed to death by the gas tank, should the tank be this close to the floor or did someone tighten the straps to much, it hasn't had any serious offroading yet and was just wondering if this is how they are or what now i can't get them in unless i lower the tank, what do you guys think......thanks

My tank sits amout 1.5" from the rear cargo floor. I hope thats helpful.

well i didn't bother with the gas tank i just cursed and cursed and fought with them until i got them back in and will never take them out again unless it's absolutely necessary
