You definitely want it there if you want your heater to work. My hose connecting it to the heater system broke and man was it cold. So, YES, put it back.

you can find a smaller one from a junk yard if you need to.
but yeah your heater will be stuck on defrost since the vacuum won't switch any of the levers

Replace it with one from a Chevy S-10 or Chevy Astro van. They are alot smaller than the stock jeep ones and the controls will still work fine. With the 1 from a S-10 or astro, they are small enough to mount on the firewall, out of the way with ALOT less hose to go bad.
