My wife has the 1999 XJ, The ac stop working this past summer. I recharged it with coolant from autozone, That worked about a week, then it needed a recharge. I put coolant with leak sealer in it but that did not work either. It works fine when it has coolant in it, should I just assume its the evaporator and change it. I don't want to waste more money.

Thanks for any advice.

By the way we bought the jeep brand new and have never had to take it to a mechanic. it has 120,000 mile and running great.

Just brakes
Tires
Driver side window regulator
sparkplugs, wires, distributor cap
oil changes
new raditor cap
headlight switch
1 fuse
New shocks (The rear ones were a pain in the ass had to drill and retap two broken bolts.

Have your shop (or you) put in some flourescent dye, run it for a while, check it with a black light. Check the compressor, all the lines, evap, etc.
That should show where the leak is.
