Kind of dumb question..

well I was just enlightened tonight that my woody has a D44 in the rear.. BUT looking at the RC site at their lifts they only have the chrystler 8.25 and the D35.. Are the mounts the same as the D44? or do they not have a kit for the D44?

and is the front axle a D30 still? or was that upgraded as well?

thanks for handling the newb questions..

The front axle was always a Dana 30 - the rear was either Dana 35 (full production life,) Dana 44 (until mid-1988 or so w/Trailer Tow, featured 4.0L/AW4/OEM External Cooler,) or ChryCo 8.25" (1993 or so onward, w/o ABS.)

Since the Dana 44 is a direct swap for the D35 in the rear of the XJ (if you can find an XJ D44,) I'd find it fairly safe to say that the lifts should also work between the two. However, I'd call the vendor to make sure - it's not time wasted if you learn something, and a couple minutes on the phone would save you hours of swearing, I think...

Unless someone upgraded it your front is a HP Dana 30. Never used a RC lift, but I don't imagine it would be that much different no matter what the axle.

I'm guessing the concern would be the axle tube thickness in relation to the size of the Ubolts needed on the rear packs. I believe the D35 tubes are the approx size of the D44, so a D35 kit would be ordered.

I think it is a Dana44 and Chryco 8.25 that have the same axle tube size. Call or email someone to verify.

No, the 8.25 tubes are much larger.

Like I said, I'm pretty sure the D44 tubes are the same diameter.

Here's what Jeep Horizons has to say about XJ rear axles...

Dana 35 non c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 84-89

Dana 35 c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 90-01

Chrysler 8.25 - 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 91-96

Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 97-01

Dana 44 non c-clip - 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" axle tube - used 87-89 on some (not all) XJs equipped with towing package.

I'd say to go with the 8.25" size. It's a smaller gap than D35's would be.

Wow. You sure can do math. 3-2.75=.25 2.75-2.62= .13 go with the dana 35... You will just have to bend the U bolts a little bit. Just ta ta taappp it in!

I read him off the list that you guys gave me and the guy at RC says that "the housing is the same as the D35 as on the D44 so it should just be the same.." well that inspires confidence :twak: lol.. But he said if I go and measure the U-Bolts that he will make sure or see if they have some for the D44..
