before i tear into the jeep to see exactly where its leaking from is this a common problem that i should expect? Maybe there is a seal or somthing that always goes bad?

There are several possibilities...

1) The return hose has worn through somewhere, and is dripping.
2) The pressure hose has worn through somewhere, and is dripping
3) The Pitman shaft seal is worn, and your leak is down by the Pitman arm
4) The input shaft gland is worn, and your leak is up by where the column shaft goes into the box.

It is more common for the hoses to leak, so start there. Begin by cleaning the box, pump, and hoses thoroughly, then let the engine idle in place while you watch the hoses for about two minutes. Then, have a helper turn the steering wheel back and forth to stress the system while you're watching (Park or Neutral is OK for this - you just want the steering system to act...) and jus "bump" full lock a couple of times each way (don't hold it at full lock - deadheading the pump can cause bigger problems than you've got now...)

Check the hoses along their full length, and keey an eye on the pump housing as well, since your leak may be up there and dribbling along the length of the hoses...
