Installing right side vac disco axle shaft

So what's the trick w/installing the right side axle shaft on a vac disco axle? When I pulled it a bunch of fluid leaked out and it cam right out but when I try to get it back in I can't get it into position. A couple of times it felt like it was in but it didn't want to go into the housing anymore.

I pulled it with the Jeep in 4lo and I'm trying to install it with the Jeep in 4 lo as well. Should it be in 2wd?

Ok then here's what I did:

I inserted the axleshaft in as far as it would go, turned until I could feel it catch then I used the 3 bolts that hold the unit-bearing assembly on to pull it back in. Turn 3-4 turns per bolt then switch corners.
