I'm new on this forum, just found this section.
I just bought my 2nd XJ and so far I haven't done much except for a lot of cleaning and over due maintenance.
I started a build thread: http://www.offroadpassport.com/forum/showthread.php?t=80
Here's a before & after:
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr138/dzJeepChic/A%20Jeep%20Named%20e/AJeepCallede010.jpg
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr138/dzJeepChic/A%20Jeep%20Named%20e/AJeepCallede078.jpg
I'm not sure what mods I'm going to do yet. I mostly want to use her for expedition type travel; washboard & rutted roads but able to get thru some obstacles here and there. I'm sure some lift is needed but I'm reticent to mess with the stock suspension as it rides so smooth!
Anyways, maybe I'll see some of you AZ guys out on the trail!

Diane,
I really dig your Jeep. It cleaned up very nice. The stance attained with the 2" shackle/spacer looks good with the 31"s. A storage platform in the back would look good, and be useful. As far as suspension goes, I'd recommend getting some heavier duty leaf spring packs to help with the weight you might end up with if you use it for "expeditions". What else are you planning to do to it?

Thanks! What do you mean by 'storage platform'? Do you mean inside the back? I'm definetly going to want a rack on top and to build a platform across where the backseat was so I can sleep in it if I need to. Expedition-type travel is really all I plan on for now. Wouldn't heavy duty leaf pack stiffen the ride a lot? I'd like to keep it squishy if I can.

Have you looked into Old Man Emu suspension stuff at all? It's a little pricey, but the ride is absolutely fantastic. It's not advertised as a lift kit, but it's main purpose is to enhance all attributes of the stock suspension. Increase payload, ground clearance, and comfort. Throw on a set of light or medium duty springs, and you'll eliminate the sag in the rear end of the Jeep and keep your "squishy" ride. :) I'm waiting for my set-up to be shipped from Australia as we speak.

Wow, thanks for the tip! I'll def. be looking into that b/c the one thing I didn't like about my 1st XJ is how rough it rode after I lifted it. Now that I have this one I notice such a huge difference; don't want to make the same mistakes.

So, Paul, are half doors handy in the rain? I'm positive they're ace for running rocks but rain is the one thing that's kept me away from one mod.
How many geocaches did you log?

Well yeah the rain is a bit of a damper, BUT I was expecting it, and the interior is also gutted & radios mounted where they'll get little to no water.
I still have the full doors too so I can be back to "normal" in about 30min.
As for the Caches I got my 2nd FTF and the total for the day was 3, plus checked on 1of my 2 caches near Munds park & dropped a travel bug. I was going to look for more but Id had enough of the constant rain, so home I went.

Anyways, they look cool. Maybe someday I'll look at something like that for moab or the rubicon. In july i saw 2 rigs on the rubicon with them.

Got a XJ today. Cant wait to start building it up. It's a 2000 picked it up for 4k and it is solid. Coming from the Midwest it's nice to get a rust free vehicle. My plan is full traction lift, 33's and tire mount rear bumper. I am sure there will be many mods after that. Learning how to post pics so I will post some later.

She's not a lot taller because the suspension lift replaced a bump kit, but she rides good and will handle better when loaded down.

just bought this 93' xj. the guy was unsure about any of the mods but he said it is a 6.5 in lift with 4:11 gears and a 4.2l engine auto tranny and thats about it. i think it might be a bigger lift than a 6.5 and i dont know if it really has 4:11 gears. he didnt do any of the mods to it. the previous owner did so who knows what its got! lol. its suuuuuper fun though!! ive got some plans to make her into a beast! lol

What to do next? You ask..... LOCKER if not both at least one. Replace that 35 if that is what is in the rear. For the lift you got and tires that HP 30 in the front will work great for you. I would buy a locker before I spent the money on metal for bumpers.... Then sliders before bumpers...
Trust me or just ask everyone they will tell you the samething.

Nice looking rig David-Jeeper. I'd definitely say get rid of that D35(looks like it) out back, pop in a locker front or rear, and some rock sliders should all be high on your list. I'm in Chandler myself, so it's good to see another east-sider. I'm looking for a new rig now, so hopefully inside of a couple weeks, I'll be back to hittin' the trails every weekend. Lemme know when you wanna plan something.

Nope not at all! :D Too bad you can't tell in the pic but this is where my gutter guard peeled off and nearly took off my high lift too. I love these yota leafs I'm running. All aftermarket leafs I have tried and seen are too stiff in comparison to the coils in front. These tacoma lift leafs are longer and softer. They stuff up or droop as soon as you start flexing. I was going to do coilovers in back because I hate how the rear always throws the jeep around but now I'm keeping leafs in back

I cut out the fender wells, plated the frame, ran the hoops and braced them to the frame and to each other. When I do the rest of the cage it will tie right into the hoops.

Yeah, they measure out to be about 32 by 10. I went with 32's for a couple of reasons, first and foremost, they were cheap, they are a fairly light wheel and tire combo, don't have to regear, stopping isn't too bad, and at this height I don't have to trim any metal. Once these tires wear out is when I'll do the next big jump, hopefully to 37's, axles, gears, lockers. But for now, sliders and recovery points in the form of front and rear bumpers are next. Little by litte, but I don't think it will ever be "done".

Alright, so here's the low down on my rig at the moment. I will try to get as many of the parts that are on it as right as possible seeing as I bought it already half built (in my opinion).

HI, WHO DID YOUR EXO?
Hey, sorry I didn't see this til now. It was on the XJ when I bought it. I know the guy who had it before, and back then a guy Mike who worked @ 4 Wheeler's did this cage for him. I don't know if he he's still doing anything or not. Sorry. d

I appreciate the compliment! As of now, I'm running an Old Man Emu 2.5" suspension with an extra leaf spring to help carry the heavy bumper (Garvin Wilderness with spare tire, Hi-lift, and Jerry can mount) out back and .5" spacer up front to level it out. JKS adjustable track-bar to center the front axle, Old Man Emu steering stabilizer, JKS quicker disconnects, and adjusted bumpstops. I have an NP242 transfer case, so I just went with a 1" transfer case drop to re-align the driveline, since a slip yoke eliminator is hard to come by and involves the word "hack". I don't mind the 1" of ground clearance I lose, since I typically don't subscribe to the "hardcore" wheeling scene. Talk to Dirk at DPGoffroad.com for even more specifics; he knows what he's talking about. I also put AJ's rock sliders on, to protect to unibody. I got the kind that don't stick out (I forget what AJ calls them), since my Jeep isn't too tall where I would need steps, and I like how stealthy they are. I'm not flashy, but with the added articulation from the OME setup, limited slip in the back, and the protection of steel all around, I can go anywhere I would ever want to go.
As for tires, I chose 245/75R16s on the stock wheels. My goal for the build was to stay close to the "factory settings", so I chose not to get aftermarket wheels. They are the ones that Chrysler/Jeep spent countless hours designing specifically for the Cherokee, so I humbly decided that anything I put on in their place would be woefully inferior. 245/75R16 is a little smaller than a 31" tire, and is about 9.5" wide. I am a strong advocate in the 'tall and skinny' tire argument, so if you care for me to elaborate on that, I will. Also, most tires in this size are 'E' rated, meaning they have 10 belts of steel in them. This is simply unnecessary for the super lightweight Cherokee, so with some research, I found that the new Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac makes this size tire in load range 'C', which has 6 belts of steel. So not only am I enjoying a great size tire, I don't have to feel like I'm riding on tires make of bricks. I mean c'mon, I got an Old Man Emu set-up for the nice ride; why would I hinder it with hard tires. And the Duratracs are very nice, I must admit.
I put an ARB bumper in front, which several people on this board will tell you is useless, due to it being a little soft. I beg to differ. For rock crawling, I'd steer clear of the bull-bar. But for long-distance, driving-at-night-in-Mexico type trips, high and tight bumpers with no forgiveness to impact do you very little good when a burro runs out into the road. You hit it with a stout bumper, and you have damage to the unibody. Now you're totaled in Mexico. But with a bumper that is specifically designed in Australia for kangaroo impacts, you can be sure that the bumper will take the blow, and not your Jeep.
I also wield an ARB Simpson II rooftop tent. I sleep better in that thing than I do in my bed at home.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Bobby

Hey Bobby, thanks for taking time to give a detailed spec.
So you have only a 3" lift?
I have sort of a similar Jeep but it just didn't look as good as yours........hope you don't mind if i copy some of yours :shhh:
Here is mine running on 4.5" Rough Country (was told by PO but not quite agree) with 265/70R16 on OEM wheels ;).

I Love everything TnT puts out. It's a PITA to install, but bomb proof. and she tucks and flexes so much I cant trim enough fender to utilize it.

New to the Forum and New to XJ's. Im from Sierra Vista Az,I just picked up this 90 XJ 2 door locally last week.
Vehicle is equipped with the following:
Rustys 4.5" Lift,Front Quick Disconnects,Brand new 32X11.50X15 BFG All Terrain Tires,Rear Aussie Locker, simulated beadlock wheels. Rig has 140,000 Box A miles on it.
So far im loving it but havent gotten out to do any real serious wheeling. All the people I know that like to go wheeling cant because their rigs are broken.
Anyway just wanted to share my rig with the XJ community.

here's my bitch, specs are as follows:
1999 XJ SE pretty much stock, 325,000 miles Chili Pepper Red
NP231 AW4 4.0 hp D30 C8.25 open diffs
rear d-ring receiver hitch tow point, i go back and forth from flares and flareless when i get bored with it, interior plastics (center console, all the side panels) are bedlined, rear air shocks, stock sized tires, TB spacer...think that's it at the moment, here are some pix, then my plans
flexing the stock suspension a bit

alright well im kind of a picture whore lol, this jeep has some history with me, my dad bought it new in 99 so all 325k miles have been more or less put on it with me in or driving it, i finally got ahold of it a year ago and i have put on the last 60k miles, its my baby and i plan on having it around forever...
plans, it has a really strong motor for the miles it has, but i will be rebuilding the motor next, and throwing on a new header, port and polish the head, all that, all the work will be done by me. minus the hot tanking of the head and potential valve job. long run, i am joining the air force so it will be going around the world with me, 3.5" OME based lift, 31s, done up as an overland rig. which means it will be pulling a custom built aluminum m416 replica trailer (built by me..)
for now it mostly hauls me around the phx area, and my tools to go work on these things...

Bought my Jeep about a month ago, and have been working on it to get it back up to par ever since - someone put some time and effort into it, and I think someone else then beat the crap out of it through ignorance or neglect.

Figured I'd update since the larger tires and the cage. Still my DD, so really no plans to go any bigger right now. Still want to add a CB, decent stereo, maybe cut the fenders a little - I keep tweaking the sheetmetal on the front edge of the rear fenderwells.

It's actually not too bad. I've broke 3 shafts in 1-1/2 years. The rig is light, I'm a good driver and I stay off the skinny pedal for the most part. Everytime I broke, it was my fault. The first was in Parker trying to shoot up the buggy line on the launch pad. I would get within about 6" to the top and would just loose forward momentum. I broke that shaft after about 6 or 7 full throttle attempts (not too bad). The second was broke in a huge undercut and the last was broke when I let my kid drive it. He nosed dived it, panicked and put the pedal to the floor.
It's not the smartest, but depending on the driver it is doable.

I was locked on 35's and never broke in the 3 years I ran a d30. Its all about staying out of the skinny when wheeling a d30.
Any pics yet? We need pics... it's like coke to an addict

Yep, I never broke a shaft on 35's either. The skinny pedal can be your best friend or your worst enemy:cheers:

No windshield in the last pick. I smashed it a couple years ago. It likes to lay on it's side and play dead every once in a while!
