It should be a good weekend to get out in the desert with a slight chance of rain and a high of 63°f.
I decided to go out to the florence area monday and pre run lower ajax to test some parts and welds I did to my truck over the weekend. My tranny cross member was cracked and I broke a tang on my front pinion yoke when I attempted a “diff” way up three feathers a few weeks ago. The front u-joint had walked almost completely out on a trail ride last weekend. I’m glad I gave the truck a good looking at and found these problems and everything held up fine.
Anyway I went up upper woodpecker and then down lower ajax and the trails are in good shape. I think when we wheel ajax and get near the upper end we will spend some time in a rock garden for those who want to give it a try. This small portion of the wash is said to be impassable in well’s book but I guess that’s a conservative statement or maybe that part of the wash has changed. It had been about three years since I was there.
It’s going to be a good time. http://www.dakotacom.net/~jeepster/tipshades.gif

I don’t remember how to get to the trailhead so to those of you from the Phoenix area, could we meet at the Shell/Texaco station on US 60 where the freeway ends and continue from there? I haven't heard the trailhead meeting time yet, so I can't really suggest a time.
I sure am looking forward this run. Got my XJ back from the shop today!! Both ends of the bumper match now (the other side was sawed off!)the crack where the bumper bent is welded, and most importantly my front ARB is fixed so I'm back in business!!!
Thanks DesertFab, you're the Best!!!

Last I heard was pulling out from meeting spot at 830am. We from Tucson are leaving here and starting the presidential motorcade at 0600 from my place and heading to FJ to arrive right around 0800.
So, if there are any others from Tucson that want to run the convoy with us, chime in so we can get-r-done and get outta town.

If thats the TExaco in Florence, I think we should be there by 0800. We are going to try to beat that. I am a stickler about being early to time promised.

I was referring to the Shell/Texaco past Apache Junction on Rt 60 not in FJ. It was a Shell turned into a Texaco or reverse. Now I'm confused.
Someone from Phoenix area please speak up. I'll meet wherever as long as I can follow you to the trail from there.
Thanks much,

I got a call about 11pm and they needed the stock steering I had offered. Evidently "Wounded XJ" was stopped somewhere between FJ and my house in Chandler, and they couldn't drive it due to extreme death wobble. David C. and the other guys from Flag came over and picked up the steering. When they left my house they were heading back to repair the XJ. I sure hope they're o.k.

Yeah. . . we made it. . . finally. . . at 5 am this morning. Nothing like a 24 hr marathon 4 wheelin trip. Woo Hoo! We took the steering back to wounded XJ and changed out the linkage part that broke. After we did that, "wounded XJ" was still experiencing major death wobble. We made it to a Wal Mart parking lot and switched out the steering stabilizer with the one that Sandy gave us and it fixed the problem!!! After that, our only problem was passengers that hung the drivers out to dry by falling asleep :). But anyway, we made it.
We want to say thanks again for all the help. Especially David and Sandy. You bailed us out. We had a blast and will definitely be signed up for the next one. As for wounded XJ. . . he's gonna go shopping first. hehe

I know I sure had a blast. I learned ALOT about my rig and gained ALOT of confidence in her aswell.
My wife keeps telling me that my jeep is my mistress, so maybe I will nickname her " The Mistress"
Anyway, met alot of great people, had a great time. Cant wait till the next run and doing some more technical stuff.
I know it will be 2 - 3 weeks for me due to needing some things needing to be added to the rig like a SYE and skid plates and a working radio.

I've got a ZJ sitting in the back yard. I don't think the wife would appreciate me taking parts off though. I'll check it out. There are also numerous upgrades that I have found just in the last little bit (RE, Rusty's, etc.) that are pretty reasonable.

I was just looking at a heavy duty tie rod to start with. Something a little more stout than stock. I looked at mine when I got home this morning and I could see where I hit it on a rock twice. It was also slightly bent. I definitely want to upgrade before I hit another trail.
