Shocks and springs

My shocks on my 99 xj I don't think have ever been changed. I want to replace them but I'm wondering should I replace the springs along with them?

Also are all shocks the the same like gas/air etc.

If you're not putting a lift on, you don't need to change springs. I think a lot of people that keep a stock rig like to run Monroe Sensa-Trac shocks. I think they're relatively inexpensive.

Well, depends on if you have the common rear leaf sag that a lot of cherokees tend to develop. If I remember correctly, it should measure 17.5" from the bottom of the arch to the center of the wheel.
