just heard that an XJ from Connecticut got beat up there. the XJ was on a 40degree rock hill, idling in 1st gear (not park, and no e-brake), the driver got out and turned off the engine, and the XJ started rolling backwards down the hill, with the driver being pushed along in front of the open drivers door. the door hit a tree and was pushed back into the fender and the XJ almost killed the driver then. the jeep kept going down, turned 90 degrees and stopped a few feet short of the driver's boyfriends XJ.
no more info on the driver, I guess she's pretty beat up, but I didn't hear anything more so I guess she's pretty much ok, except for needing a new door, fender and transmission?

I'm freaking amazed at how fast news travels... where'd you hear this from? It's mostly correct.
My girlfriend is from NY, and I am originally from CT. For whatever reason, she got out with the Jeep still in gear. She says she was reaching in to do something and bumped the ignition to off. The idling engine was the only thing holding the Jeep on the hill while in gear.
She tried to jump into the Jeep and stop it from rolling, and when she couldn't keep up with it and began to get dragged down by the door, got out of the way. As you said, the XJ rolled down hill about 25 feet toward myself sitting in my Jeep and took out the door/fender on a tree. It turned 90 degrees while maybe 10ft from me.
She is damn lucky. I thought we were going to be calling in a helocopter to lift her out of there as well as having two totaled Jeeps.
Instead she had scrapes on both elbows and a knee. The fender and door are toast (She already has a new door from the junkyard). Trans is undamaged. We ratchet strapped the door shut, winched her and myself up to the top of the hill, and she wheeled the rest of the day and the next.
It couldn't have turned out any better for such a bad situation.
Not that I should have to remind everyone... but don't leave vehicles in gear idling. My girlfriend has gotten enough scolding/lecturing/teasing that I know she'll never do it again. I know she didn't even do it on purpose.
I'm also a pretty firm believer in having a working e-brake.

Thanks warpigxj,
I'm definitely glad no body got hurt, and even Jeep damage was minor. I'm glad to see that the guys posting on BMJA aren't being too critical of her "moment of neglecence". I'm just lucky whenever I have one they have not been so scary or dangerous.
She's a real smart person, by far smarter than me. I'm not sure why she stepped out of her Jeep and thought she left it in park, but it was not intentional!
Do you think you could post back to BMJA (since I don't have a user name on there) and try to clean up the finer details before they get too far blown out of proportion?
The "tree" was about a 4-5" diamater tree, and the door only bent back as far as ~100 degree opening before pushing the tree over.
Her Jeep ended up somewhere around 10 feet from mine, not even close to '1ft' away.
None the less, he did get the moral of the story right... Fix your e-brake, don't leave it in gear, and be careful while wheeling.
