I know that I should know but how to ID if I have a 44 under my 87 xj?

the brake drums are huge, but I don't f'n know.

look at the differential cover.
D35 is oval
d44 is angular

On a side note why do some D35 rears have the HUGE drums like the D44 and some have the little dinky ones?

The earlier year D-35's have monster brake drums with cooling ribs on them. Newer ones are smooth, smaller and lighter. I don't know the answer, but I'm betting economics of steel prices had something to do with it.
