Intermountain Geostash Challenge
Date August 16th-18th 2007
Description
The NAXJA Intermountain Geostash Challenge will be a run involving your jeep, a GPS and your thinking skills.
Taking place in the Uintah Mountains in of Northern Utah.
How it works
Throughout the Northwest slope of the Uintah Mountains, 20 caches will be placed in remote locations. Each participant will have 3 days to locate the caches of their choice. The goal of the event is to use your GPS, mapping skills and common sense to locate 5 hidden caches while enjoying and exploring the area. Each cache will contain a sealed "Package" in which you will find specially marked playing cards. The evening of the final day, a dinner will be held and together everyone will open their "Packages." Prizes will be given to whomever can make the best 5 card poker hand using the cards found in each cache.
Note: A GPS is not required for this event. You can buddy up with someone who has a GPS.
Costs
$20 Dollars per poker hand.
$15 Dollars per T-shirt
$10 Dollars per adult dinner
$5 Dollars per child dinner.
Rules
1. Each participant will only be allowed to take 1 "Package" per cache per hand purchased. Each cache will have an individual mark on both the card and the sack they are sealed in. If anyone has more than one card per hand they have paid for from a single cache they will be disqualified. Packages retrieved from the caches's remain sealed until presented to the officials for counting!
2. Everyone must obey the posted Forest Service speed limit of 30 MPH. This contest does not reward speed. Everyone will have the same amount of time to complete the challenge. Officials will be roaming the forest looking for speeders. If caught you will be disqualified.
3. All vehicles must be part of the “buddy” system. Two or more vehicles must be together at all times.
Why?
-- The forest is vast and help could be a long time coming. Some of these caches are very remote.
-- To meet new people.
-- Those without a GPS must buddy up with someone who has a GPS.
4. NAXJA vehicle requirements must be met.
5. Each vehicle must have a two way radio. Either a CB or an FRS radio. Each area will have a set channel and everyone will be required to run on that channel.
6. All participants must be paid and registered by July 1st in order to compete.

We have elder care issues, 102 year old Grandmother, 80 y.o. and slowing father and a 79 year old mother with dementia. Mary lives with the three of them and I am one street over with my 90 year old mother-in-law living here.

Where are the Unitah Mtns? Specifically which way would we go from SLC?
How hard core are the trails? Can they be done in a Trail Blazer rental from Enterprise?
What's the lodging situation like?

The Uintah Mtns are located almost exactly 100 miles east of SLC. We will be headquartering 12 miles south of Evanston Wy, which is 3 miles into Wyoming on I-80.
Some of us will be camping but there is lots of hotels in Evanston also.
Almost all the roads in the Mtns can be handled by just about any 4wd vehicle. We are planning on putting caches in enough places that there will be something for everyone, from easy to semi- hardcore.
Clint
January 3rd, 2007, 07:48
Most if not all the caches and traveling will be in Utah. The easiest way to access the area is through Evanston.

Here is a basic map. (http://www.go-utah.com/activityLink.cfm?activity_id=453063435) We will be in the area south of Evenston along 150.
How hard core are the trails? Can they be done in a Trail Blazer rental from Enterprise?
Most of the trail would be rated (Moab) 1-2+ range. We will have a large variety of location for the stashes. I would expect most could be done in a stock vehicle.
This event is more for fun and scenery not hard core wheeling.
What's the lodging situation like?
Tom
For Motel/Hotel Evanston is the best bet. For campgrounds we will have more info later.
I can tell you that Stillwater (http://www.reserveamerica.com/campgroundDetails.do?subTabIndex=0&agency=NRRS&parkId=333) is the closest I could find on the Reserve America sight. There are some a bit closer but I cannot remember the names nor do I have info on facilities. Might have to wait until the snow melts to go see.

Will any of the caches be off the trail so that a short (I consider 5 miles short, YMMV :D ) hike will be required? Also, is this like a scavenger hunt/race type or will multiple people be able to succesfully "find" the cache?
Also, I'll most likely bring three kids and I'm sure there will be about 1000 more. Can we include stuff for the kids? I'll volunteer to help on that. I have put together maps an small orienteering activities for my kids in the past, I'm sure some small treasure maps and cheap-o compasses......
Looking forward to it.

Liking the kid idea a lot. Get with me on this.
As far as off the trail. Haven't thought about that much. One thing we have thought about is making some a little more difficult then others. The more difficult the cache the higher a chance that you will receive a good card.
Every cache will have one card per hand bought. The reason for this is we HAVE to make sure this isn't a race in any way shape or forum. NAXJA insurance Regs are very specific on this. This is one reason why we put the disqualification rules in...You can hussle but not rush.

Kinda serious... something like adding small treasures to the cashes so the kids can look forward to finding the caches.
Maybe have a kids hand as an option. With kids prizes???
This will be a very family friendly event. We have some time to make it great fcr the kids too. Great idea!!
