were is the coolant temp sender

It's in the top back of the head near the valve cover. It's also by the head stud that the braided ground cable is attached to if that helps you at all. It has a single white-tanish wire going into it. And for our 87-90 XJs there is no cheap replacement for it either.

Actually which coolant temp sender? The one for the gauge or the computer? The one for the gauge is in the head, the one for the computer is down by the exhaust manifold.

On 87-90 4.0s the computer one was down by the exhaust manifold. In 91< units they moved it to the thermostat housing. Up until 96 IIRC the one for the gauge was in the back of the head.
