Hi gang,

I was wondering what your thoughts on cup holders for a cherokee?

I have seen factory versions, one that goes over the hand brake, and I think I saw one that connects to the center console on the passenger side. Need to get something for my 1990.

Thanks again for your help!!!

I had the one that goes over the hand break, but I took it out because it makes it really hard to use the break. I guess it would be alright if you don't use your parking break, but I always use mine and couldn't stand having that cup holder in the way. I have yet to find a good one for XJs, but I am in the same boat as you because I NEED cupholders.

The one that goes on the side of the console is ok. I did put some dry wall screws through the top to keep it from popping off when bumped. JIM.

I have both, one of each in my two XJ's. I like the one above the brake because it is handy and I have mounted my AW4 "manual" swiltches there. No reaching for either activity.
I like the one on the console because I can still use the brake and I can remove it by lifting it by the passenger door like a hinge to remove. Since it is on the passenger side, it doesn't bother my leg!
I don't like either of them for the junk the gets put in them when there isn't a cup to fill the storage space! Even with that goofy pocket in front of the stick!

The BEST cup holder in the world is found at Wally World for about $6. I have purchased several over the years for different vehicles and they rock. I wish I could remember the brand name... something like "the wedgie". It's black plastic that holds 2 large cups and is wedge shaped so it slides down between the seat and the console, or between a slit in the seats. It has holes that you can put screws thru for a permanent mount but I've never felt the need to do that. I like the fact that I can just push it in and pull it out as I need it, or put it in another car. Amazingly enough I have never had it bounce or slide out by accident, and it's even more sucure when loaded down with the big gulps!

I've got the over e-brake one in my 94... its pretty much worthless if you have an AX-15, your arm needs to be right where the cup goes.

I don't buy cup holders cause I get tired of people spilling drinks all over my floors/seats. When I have drinks I usually buy ones with a screw-on top so that I can just put the top on and lay it in my lap. That doesn't really help you though, sorry about that.

I had the over-e-brake one in my 89 XJ and was glad when it broke - it constantly got in the way whenever I tried to actually use the brake until it snapped at the mounting screws.

Currently I use a $0.99 holder with a hook. The hook sits in the front passenger corner of the e-brake well and the body of it sits on the 'hump' between the seat and the console. It holds most drinks well although every so often the holder falls in the dark, so my coffee doesn't stay on the hump real well without it...

I also have this in the backseat to keep drinks cool in the summer:

There's internal ducting to direct rear a/c up through the wire mesh cupholders and around the drinks.

the one that goes over the hand brake is artarded. my jeep had one when i bought it and it didnt even fit a 600ml bottle of coke. so now i place my drink on the shifter console between my AW4 shifter and my CB which is mounted on the passener side of the console, it sits there not bad.

I tried both. The one on the right side of the console was a good idea, although not deep enough. Plus I'm going to mount a CB there, so I removed it.

Tried the one over the parking brake too. PITA to raise the brake, and it kind of got in the way when drinks were in there and you wanted to use the center console lid as an armrest......Plus, you couldn't use the parking brake tray for putting a phone in, or whatever.....

So I sold that too...

If anybody has any other ideas let us know, bottles with caps or cans in the lap are the only way I've been surviving for a long while :)

Sounds like anything I try will be in the way...I'm all arms and legs, it's all cramped. As it is, I just found one that mounts over the E-brake. Paid $2 at the self serve yard. You guys make it sound like that's too much. LOL

Is there enough wire behind the mirror switch to just pull-through and mount in the cupholder? Be nice to know before I take things apart.

That is Cool.... The new BMW's have drink cooling/heating system like that.. I think they ripped you off...

I thought all that did was heat, since heat comes out of the lower vents.....A/C blows from there too?

This is more for beej but for him this would be a 'cup holder' right up his alley

I've tried the others and didn't like them.

This is what I made.

Bicycle water bottle holder with the attachment tube side sanded flat to keep it from twisting.
Screwed into the dash right below the center heater vent with two long flat head screws.
I also modified the upper cage to hold a bigger drink.

We just got back from vacation and didn't spill too much!

Saw that online awhile ago, but it's a European Jeep...might have actually got it from a French Jeep pictures page.

So I don't have any idea where to buy those. They look like they'd work quite well, at the same time no drilling would be required. Looks like they just stick on with some sticky velcro or double sided mounting tab.....

PS - Looks like it would also keep that center vent from pointing down as well :)

The wedgie by TSI, slips between the seats or seat and console.

Some people have complained about holders taking up too much room...well I have one of these in a Miata and can hold two 44 ouncers AND a passenger. Even though most times the drinks are more important than the passenger.

The best IMO is the 97+ Console, but its alot of work for a drink.

That looks like it would make it uncomfortable in terms of your arm always being on it if you were the passenger......

I bought .99 cent cup holders that hook onto your door. I drilled a hole in the back and removed the shifter cover (I have an '86 manual but auto's should be the same). I used zip ties to hold onto the metal brackets under the shifter cover and through the hole in the cup holder. Now they hang down the side and hold just about anything!

I'll snap a shot of the $0.99 cupholder positioning tomorrow. As long as the front seat stays back, it fits fine.

My cherokee doesn't have any center console (91 basic), so I bought a double cup holder with a flat bottom from target and I just sit it under the brake handle. When I'm driving the handle rests in the center and keeps the cup holder down, never had a problem till my wife stole it for her car!

True, but no heat comes w/ bilevel.......unless you have the newer Jeep without the heat valve.......or remove it an plumb directly to the heater core.

I picked up this at Kragen for like 6 bucks. Its called the octopus. Works really good. It stays put whenever im 'roading. Its only dumped a drink once but that was with a large drink full from taco-bell and I was making a u-turn in the middle of a highway. But other than that its been get.

You have rusty floorboards? I see a dip in the carpet on the right side....

jesusjeep19

Thats not rust, its dirt and some spilled fluid. And the dip is were the plastic is worn through.

I have a 90 Pioneer and found a plastic thing at Pepboys that holds 2 cups and has a little spot in between for gum (or something that size). The base has screw holes and a flat plastic piece to shove between the seat and the center console. If I have some time I'll charge the battery in my camera and shoot a pic for you. I think it was like $5. Only issue I have is that the cup holes are cut a little big for the cups that usually go in there. For 5 bucks I'm satisfied. Pepboys had a few different kinds when I went, including that jesusjeep19 posted a pic of. Most seemed inexpensive.

Hm, maybe I'm just not looking at the heat valve. I know it closes when on OFF vacuum is applied and it sucks the valve)

Does your valve stay opened when you turn VENT on?

I'll try bilevel tomorrow. It would be fantastic to have heat both down and up! Can you believe it, I've never ran that since I got it September of 2005? lol.........I'm stoked!

December 12th, 2006, 22:18
Ok, looking at a 1993 XJ FSM....

Heater valve will be

Closed on OFF

Open on Bilevel

Closed on Vent

Open on Defrost

Open on heat....

FYI.
