transfer case identification

I had a transfer case in the bed of my MJ when i purchased it. I had no need for it, so I gave it to a member of my club. It has no identification tag on it, so it is unknown if it is actually a 231. My MJ has a 231 in it, so i believe that it is a 231. Is there any way to ID the case w/o opening it, and without the little circle tag? He needs to know if it is a 231 or a 242, because hes going to do some work on it, and drop it in his ZJ. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

IF you've got it narrowed down to either an NP231 or NP242, you can check the number of clicks of the range lever. Count them from one end to the other, and compare to notes below...
