The plan was to work on my XJ all day today with one trip to look at and possibly buy a tranny and tcase for my MJ planned in the morning.

I went out to the location this morning (45min drive) but was unable to locate the proper building where the drivetrain was supposed to be. Didn't have a phone number, just some confusing directions.

Got home and began working on my XJ, almost had a broken bolt out of the frame and the phone rings. An old friend tells me her step dad has decided to sell his Comanche and asked me if I knew anyone. I said I was interested of coarse so I drop tools and run over there (25min drive) I knew it was a long bed but hadn't seen it for some time.

Here is what I saw.

91 4.0 HO AW4 2wd column shifter longbed No AC with seats from a dodge truck, well matched topper and fancy pinstripes, perfectly clean, not a dent, only one new scratch under the passenger mirror. Well maintaned it's whole life. He uses it to get to the flying field but now he wants to trade it in for something with air conditioning. This thing is high blue book plus. If I didn't need my Honda's incredible gas milage I'd replace it with this as a daily driver in a heart beat. I can't afford it but I could swing it if I really wanted to. If anyone wants it I'll put you in touch with the owner!

On the way home with MJ on the brain, I remember the promising doner/rustbucket I had spotted a few weeks back and decided to swing by. It was there still, sitting in front of a buisness.

I walk in and ask the owner if he wants to sell. He said yeah I probably can and proceeds to show me the truck and tell me all about it. 87 4.0 with peugot tranny, np231, Dana 44, engine and tranny skids, tow hooks, said it always started for him, just needed a battery and had a slow leak in one tire, besides a major rust problem.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/xjblue/More%20MJ/mj4wd4-0goatshort02.jpg

He said $400, I said OK

Now I'm either going to use it as a full drivetrain swap or at least the D44 and driveshafts and hood.....or I'm going to sell it to a good friend who started looking for an MJ project recently and who donated the battery.

as of this afternoon he didn't know how much they were going for, a friend at a dealer told him $1,300 or so trade in value and turn around retail $2,500 ish (without having seen it) He also has a neighbor bugging to trade him a nice TJ for it for years. It is going to go fast I have a feeling.

maybe...for wich MJ? how cheap are we talking? I've got that tranny and tcase lined up still, just told them I'm still interested even though I bought another MJ and couldn't find the place this morning. Part of me just wants to keep that 2.5 and keep it on the light side.

Jared, jump on Ryan's whole drivetrain deal if you are still wanting 4wd for the MJ and get rid of the 2.5, then, take off all of the goodies you want from this new MJ and sell that rustbucket MJ to that friend to recoup the cost of buying Ryan's drivetrain.
Just my opionion. :)

I'm interested in the rustbucket Jared if you want to sell it.
After you take everything you want off of it..

By the way, good find on both of them....

My friend just wouldn't look right in a rustbucket (I see him in more of a Limo quality rig), he is thinking along the same lines and is willing to help me grab the parts I want. (BTW Joe this is our old friend from clear one, Kyle)
OK, so it looks like I'm going to grab the likeable parts for my other Manche,
I prefer auto on the trail so DrMoab your tranny/tcase looks good but rustbuckets engine has no leaks! Decisions....

well then I'd have the remainder to sell geepfreak, is this what you have in mind Jeremy??

That rust bucket has potential.

Here's what ya should do:

Swap the drivetran into your other 'manche. Ditch the bed and doors off the rust bucket. Hack frame off just behind cab. Run a hybrid ford/chevy HPD60 front, and a D70 rear. Narrow the front down a hair, maybe 6" off each side. Of course, throw a 350/sm465/np203/np205 drivetran into it. 1/4 elliptical the rear. Leaf the front. Full exo and 42" tires.

Good to go. And nobody loses.

anyway

Finalize the plans, then perhaps an IC chapter drivetrain swap party would be in order? My biggest concern is all the work w/ a 4.0 swap.

Just let me know when. I've got a good radiator for a '90 or older XJ if you need it. Tell Kyle we all need to have a ClearOne alumni lunch one of these days. :)

I don't care for the 205:D, but something with 600-800HP, IFS with 20" travel, rear 4 linked 9" air shocks, full caged and a cheapy CD player, and It'll be good to GO!

I know where a blown B&B 327/(dyno'd at close to 550hp)matched 727, it would be a good start anyway, just need to find that JCB444 and get to work:D

well, I guess the "I just bought it" excuse doesn't fly with the local PD :) at least they didn't tow it! stinking state laws, hows anybody supposed to drive home the vehicle they just bought around here! (grab title first, get insurance first, visit the DMV for a temp tag first, (or bring along your current XJ plates).....appearantly)

It seems my friends neighbor is going to sell him that 2wd MJ after all, He may want the rustbuckets drivetrain after I grab what I'm after.

There is an XJ for sale near me (actually three for sale near me, two built black ones, one is late model with a sizeable price tag on it) it's maroon or something with a interesting sheet metal to say the least but it has a D44 out back, 700 obo written on the windshield. FYI
