904 Tranny Shift Problem

This question is on my '86 Jeep Comanche with the 2.5L, 904 auto tranny, and 207 t-case.

While pushing the pedal down on normal acceleration, I get limited power till maybe 10 mph, and then it feels like a stick shift dropping the clutch with a nice neck snap and a poopload of power. Up to the top of 1st and we're okay, but shifting into 2nd comes a bit of ehhhh, hesitation. Run through 2nd gear smoothly, and then into 3rd. Here comes the shifting point! Between gears the engine roars from 2500 RPMS to 4000 RPMS and Slams into 3rd. Time to park on this hill cause I'm frustrated... Truck is parked. Or is it? Click, click, click, click, click. Oh crap, the truck is rolling backwards.

It's a new engine, and a rebuilt tranny. I did all the install work with my father. Fluid levels are good, and we adjusted the linkage so that park is park.

Could the vacuum leak I have cause this, or is it something else?

sounds like the tranny wasn't rebuilt properly. I had bought a car with a "rebuilt trans" that had similar symptoms. brought it to a transmission specialist ... he said the previous person who rebuilt it had no clue what they where doing. i'll take his word for it b/c when he rebuilt it worked great.

Sounds like transmision bands are out of adjustment. I'd kill who ever did the rebuild!

Good news!!!!

The tranny was eating all that fluid up. Had to drive it, add a quart, drive it, add a quart, drive it, add a quart, drive add 1/2 a quart. I'm thinking it all the fluid just had to work through everything, but now I'm happy.

Truck shifts good now.
