ok a friend of mine has a xj d30 and d44, 33's, stock gears, wouldn't 4.88's and locked rear be over kill for a DD? like i thought that 4.88's was just too deep for a DD with only 33's cause i notice most of you runn 4.88's with 35's and only 4.56's with 33's! just wondering, let me know something before the tard wastes money!

If its mainly a dd, a locked rear will accelerate tire wear and cut down some on mileage. Not to mention the fact the locker will wear out quicker also from being on the road with no slipage.
To put in 4.88s is preference. If he wants to race some punk kids off the line or smoke/screach the tires, he'll make great strides; if he's running late for work and needs to go 90 down the freeway, I hope its downhill and he's in neutral!! It will reduce his highway top speed and mileage will go way down as the engine will rev much higher at highway speeds. Just depends how it is driven on a daily basis and if he is willing to live with the changes 4.88s will bring.

I'm running 4.11's on 30's, its really not that bad. Gas mileage is about the same, definatly has high revs on the highway.

what about one of them lock rights? dont they allow wheel slipage around turns? and i dont think he drive highway as it is(says it vibrates too bad at 55 much less any more than that!) but all in all 4.88's is too deep with only 33's?

33's with 4.88's in OD (.76 to 1 or something close to that on a xj auto right?) at 60 mph is about 2300 rpms...thats not too bad...on 4lo.com...if I used the calculator right

80 mph would be 3000 rpm...not toooo bad for short sprints...some say they can run like that all day.

If you put a lock right or aussie in the rear just be diligent about rotating tires...that helps out a lot...or put the locker in the front, unless you have a vacuum disconnect, cause it'll make your probably unbalanced front driveshaft spin and vibrate, with a non disco front its already balanced and spinning but with out power to the front driveshaft its not locking...thats not bad either unless you dont have powersteering

I'm running 31's with stock gearing 3.73 and plan to run 33's as soon as I get 3 more inches of lift (6.0). Its a DD however, I have installed a Tera Low 4.1, 2Lo, Hd SYE in my 231 for offroad.

I also plan on doing an OX selectable locker. I really think if you planto DD then this is the way to go!
Just my two cents..

If gears were in future plans 4.10-4.56 would be plenty. My Dad ran 4.56 with 36 Iroks and worked great.
