I'm buying a 94 4 cyl xj that needs a transmission, had an ax-5, i found someone selling a 5 speed transmission, from an 86 4cyl xj. The problem, he isn't sure what transmission he has, and it is a few hundred miles from me. Does anyone have a comprehensive site that i can send the tranny seller to help him identify what he has? any other input would be greatly appreciated.

A five-speed trans out of an 86 four-cylinder could be either a T5 or an AX5. I don't know enough to tell you how to differentiate them though.

Have a look at the shifter tower if he can take a pic. That's how I ID different Jeep trans most of the time. AX series use the same style shifter BUT the retainer for the throwout bearing changed someplace between '86 and '94 (I put a '94 YJ 4 cyl into an '84 XJ with '86 trans)
You need the '94 belhhousing, flywheel and clutch assembly and maybe the front bearing retainer (not sure if the bearing changed size or not. It was awhile ago and I think I just used another internal slave throwout bearing I had from something else)
