Anyone know of some good websites to check out for information on old mfg companies and what have you?

I found a fairly old hi-lift/farm-all jack the other day. It'll be a nice decoration for the garage, and the thing still works. It is probably 50-60 years old, and in great condition. Made by Harrah Equipment in Bloomingfield, IN.

I've been picking up old stuff my whole life, reconditioning it and adding it to my collection.
I don't know exactly why, but I get some kind of statisfaction when rescuing old tools and putting them back in service.
some of the old stuff is as good as or better than the new stuff.
I've got whole sets of old black steel (pickled finish) end wrenches, many at odd angles and lengths. They rust if you don't keep a coat of oil on them, but often the temper is exceptional.
It don't have to look pretty to work well.

I think you are right. I bet you can't even find a decent new vise at a reasonable price anymore. Its all chinese crap steel. One made 50 years ago would be a much better value. A lot of things aren't built to last anymore.

Use with caution, they like to snap. If I were you I wouldnt use it for anything heavier than a riding lawnmower.
